Merging consecutive posts from same user

Recommended Posts

I appreciate why you merge consecutive posts in a thread from the same user but the idea fails when the posts are a long time apart. An example is these posts. The two posts are three days apart and despite being new the latest post appears on the third page where nobody will notice it.

Could something be done to make sure posts in such circumstances appear as new posts? Perhaps not merge them if too much time has elapsed between them. The alternative at the moment is to start a new thread which defeats the purpose of merging in the first place.

I agree wholeheartedly.

It drives me nuts when a thread of interest to many users (eg lost dog threads) can't be bumped by the op

Same reason i've had to give up the Iridium flare posts. :(

Personally i'd go for giving long standing members the right to earn some form of elevated rights, which would include bumping as they are hardly likely to spam. Dunno if that could be done in the forum code though.

But if it was a thread of interest it wouldn't be sliding down the page with nobody having posted on it for 3 days.

Not necessarily.

Sometimes important/relevant new info comes up and if the OP was the last to post on the thread it still remains on page 3, 33 or 333. In that case someone opens a new thread anyway and it's merge with the older one.

My personal aim was to get more people understanding what goes on above, where their mobile calls come from, pointing out people floating several thousand miles overhead on the ISS etc, now i can't. It's a bit dumb.

I'm just wondering Mega...how your posts #8 + #9...didn't get merged?

Just a thought, and purely a 'personal' one. Couldn't you report a last post on a thread, and ask a mod to 'bump' the thread (by posting on it first)...stating a valid reason why you thought it necessary? Then we could look at the thread and decide if the stated reason 'is' valid!....Ok, it's a bit more work for mods, and I'm not advocating...Bumping for the sake of it. But as noted above, 'sometimes' there are valid reasons. :)

And they were both posted after closing time when shops shut.

I wouldn't feel comfortable doing that without specific permission first Pete, as i know the mods have a lot on already. And how workable would it be anyway as it would require a mod online, and going on how long some of the blatant spam lasts i guess there's regular periods when none are. (online)

The thing i really don't get is starting a new thread each time doesn't take up any more bandwidth surely, and i've no complaints if the previous days thread is deleted when a new one is started. It just all seems a little draconian to me.

As for my two posts above, no idea but i've noticed you can now view the forum when it's closed where previously you just got the maintenance message. I didn't notice the time of posting btw.
