Goooooogle
We had the new street lights fitted on our side street near work a few weeks back. One team of blokes came out and dug the old lights up. Another team of blokes came and dug a new hole. Another team of blokes came and planted the new lamps Another team of blokes came and wired them in Another team of blokes came and filled in the hole and made good. And today - a several weeks after fitting them - another lorry + team of blokes is back digging them up again. Apparently after fitting , an inspector comes and checks them - and these were found to be 1-1.5 inches too proud...so they are having to refit them to drop them further in... And just look at the mess they made... http://imgur.com/9LtgZN9 http://imgur.com/wN0Ccac I just hope whoever signed the contract to give Amey £ 1 billion plus puts some clauses in to make sure the work is A- done on time B - done on budget I can envisage the headlines 6 years from now... Hemibr
Council number crunchers have worked on similar probs. Having worked out that they could use twice the resources by doubling up on shovels they went for keeping the same number of shovels and digging half a hole. The lab techs are working on how to dig half a hole.
Vulcan B2
Haha, we had two kier workmen to do a job some years back. They realised they needed some more wood so they both went back to the van to contact the depot....one to hold the radio and the other to talk into it Laurel and Hardy
Goooooogle
An update - another team of men is back. (3 of them this time) They have taken the lamp post out and cut a couple of inches off the base with an angle grinder so it will look like it has been properly fitted when the council inspector comes back - same depth of foundation though ! Honestly you couldn't make it up ...
WallBuilder
If it's so upsetting then why not ring Amey and ask what they are up to, 2734567 I'd imagine that the lamp has to be at a certain height above the carriageway so whether they cut a couple of inches off the pole or sink it in a bit deeper isn't really anything to get worried over, now if it had been a foot difference then maybe. I assume the somewhat unfinished look is because the entire footpath is due to be resurfaced and so again as long as they haven't left it as a trip hazzard or left gaping holes some-one could fall into or make it inpassible then again let's wait to see the finished look. It should upset you too - the money for all this has to come from everyone's pocket you know ... ah never mind , go back to your Sky TV and never get worked up about owt. It was an inch or two out...all this extra work for that. I have emailed streets ahead at the council. The stupidity of this mornings work is the straw that broke the camels back - its the time it took first time round that really makes me mad. Now needs re-tarmaccing (we await yet another 3 blokes...one to work and two to watch) http://imgur.com/m46j6SU Its not on a footpath , its right next door to our warehouse which is on a small dead end side street where having the light 2 inches too high really wouldn't have mattered... Ring Amey you say? Have you tried ringing Amey? It's an interesting experience. You ring up and speak to a Council employee a few times and they pass the messages on to shy, retiring Amey employees who don't like coming to the phone. They never get back to you so then you can get put in touch with a (Council) manager who will also pass the information on to Amey who will fail to get back to you about twice. You then start threatening to get really shirty about it and someone descends from the 6000 ft. tower that Amey staff apparently inhabit and grant you a telephone audience. Alternatively you can manage to get hold of an email address of an Amey manager who will then copy you into emails to their subordinates exhorting them to, y'know, do their jobs. Subordinates will copy you into replies a few days later saying they've done it. You then pop out to check and they haven't done it. Far and away the biggest beneficiaries of this PFI are Amey and their shareholders.
WallBuilder
I've been known to contact Amey on a couple of occasions and if it's just to report something I've found their response time on the whole to be good and their email reply service keeps you in the loop. If I've needed to talk to some-one further up in the management then I always get a name and direct land line number for said person. Amey have got the unenviable job of upgrading every road and pavement in the city ova the next five years, they're also improving the drains, replacing every street light and either trimming or replacing most of the trees on our roads. After five years they've then got the job of maintaining all the above for the next twenty so I'd imagine it'll be in their interest to keep the mistakes at an absolute minimum so they'll get some financial benefit. Having seen their dedicated teams of guys eating seemingly endless butties while watching the one guy who does something (which is probably undoing the thing the last guy who does something did) if they're making any profit at all it's on our coin and not through delivering an efficient job. Bunch of idle layabouts who'd be thrown off a private job in an hour as far as I've seen.

The people doing the work are now employees of this private company The all council staff are layabouts, all private comany staff are hard workers argument doesn't apply
