This has to be the most bizarre idea the council have come up with yet.We are down to blaming Mr Whippy for climate change now.:loopy:

Since it became common knowledge that Mrs Thatcher made ice cream for a living as a girl the council have had it in for ice cream vans. :suspect:

This cannot be legal for them to do this.It would get thrown out in a EU court. Is this a precursor of trying to ban old vehicles from the centre of sheffield.Nothing surprises me anymore.

If a vehicle is deemed road worthy by VOSA by passing its annual test (including the emissions test) ,then the council would be laughed out of court if one of the Ice cream companies takes legal action against them.

Actually, no. This regulation has been around for 2 years or so now and not just in Sheffield, but nationwide. For those of you who will jump on any tentative bandwagon to have a go at the Council, a little research might have given you the facts. Here's a quote from The Independent in August 2011

Meltdown for the country's estimated 5,000 ice cream vans started with the rise of the domestic freezer in the Fifties but has been compounded more recently by new EU rules introducing lower emission limits. These mean that many older ice cream vans face costly conversions or face being taken off the road.

In London, meanwhile, tighter emissions standards will come into force from January next year. Some ice cream vans will be able to fit a filter, but the charge for those that don't will be £100 a day.

So why not have a go at the Tory and Lib Dem Councils who have already implemented the regulations? But that wouldn't fit in with your agenda, would it?

Regardless of whichever party is in charge it still seems strange to target ice cream vans while letting ancient buses happily drive around britains towns and cities. It is another EU regulation and it is another reason for leaving the EU.What are your feelings on councils targeting small businesses like this.

So let's stick to the facts then.

The EU require the vehicles to meet an emissions standard.

Other Councils have been implementing this requirement.

SCC are placing an arbitrary 5-year age limit, regardless of whether they meet the emissions standard or not.

Is that fair? or even sensible?

The Councils aren't targetting small businesses like this, the government is. In fact DEFRA, as you can see from this article in the Daily Express, again published as long ago as 2011 :

http://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/261322/Meltdown-for-ice-cream-vans

Here's the quote :

Van owners fear they will be forced out of business when air quality standards are extended in the New Year to cover a new range of vehicles.

The vans are among hundreds of thousands that will attract hefty fines if they do not meet strict new particle emission limits from January 3.

The law currently applies to London boroughs, but the Environment Department is looking at introducing low emission zones in other cities.

And DEFRA has indeed introduced this regulation to our cities. Sheffield Council, like every other Council in the country, is now required by the Government to introduce the legislation.

My girlfriends father runs a single van family run ice cream business, and has in Sheffield for 45 years. If this goes through it will kill his livleyhood, at a time of ever growing unemployment it is as disgusting as it is bizzare to pick on the ice cream men!

To Rosy Rat.I have made it clear on several occasion's that i have never voted tory and never will.I am not a big fan of politicians so please stop turning everything in to a political argument. We are all well aware of your political leaning's and the hatred you seem to harbour for people who think differently to you.Just give it a rest.

Thats the Labour council for you.

Labour are the party for the public sector working class, they dont have time for the independent entrepreneur/self employed working class, they shaft them at every opportunity.
