Not impressed with life in Sheffield

Recommended Posts

Pubs are OK, nothing special.
People come from all over the country, repeatedly, for the Kelham island pubs. If thats not special I don't know what is.

Sheffield is ok, however, the attitude of some of it's residents is a little backward and seem to oppose change or anything not "Sheffield".

I am enjoying living here after many years in the East. The only thing that really iritates me is litter.

This is a beautiful city with thousands of trees and much to be proud of. Why the hell does its inhabitants foul thier nest by dropping litter?

Any change, whether it be a new building or influx of foreign workers, is usually met with suspicion and/or backward views.

Or, people clinging on to Sheffield's past. The city will never move forward if people don't change their attitudes.

I occasionally have to get the bus through Darnall along Staniforth Road. That places is a disgrace. There is just random piles of rubbish everywhere.

You are not up with latest artistic trends are you?

I think you can be happy anywhere if you throw yourself into the community and look at the positives?

My Sister moved here first and I missed her a great deal. I often came up to visit her and everytime I went back to Essex, I just wanted to be back in Sheffield. It felt like home to me and still does.

What other city has something for everyone, while still remaining fairly safe very friendly?

Yes there are negatives but crime is national. It is easy to get caught up in forum posts and local rag headlines, and many of the reports are truly bad. But sadly it is the same all over the country.

The housing is competitive, the travel/tram links excellent too as are all these facilities;

Excellent sports centres and facilities/ 2 football stadiums

Theatres, cinemas and comedy venues

A range of night life/ clubs for all ages

Free music festivals and community festivals

Huge choice of restaurants, cafes and pubs

Peak district and some lovely pubs

Cultural events

Good schools

Lovely people

Places of worship for every faith

climbing and ice skating

Dog track and casino

Shopping and markets

Clubs and societies for every interest imaginable

Education facilities

Good health facilities and alternative therapies

Easy access and links to other cities and towns

I could go on but you get the picture... Thats why I moved here. I had none of this in Essex!

I miss the ski village though, used to go bowling a lot there...

just off chesterfield road, in Meersbrook. I accept there is undoubtedly some areas which are pleasant and are not affected by these issues, but I am afraid it has not been a good impression of the City.

That,s just down the road from me so I pass it almost daily but honestly seen nothing like that,at least no worse than any other town or city.

Lot's of ways to spin it. It's green, sporty, safe and close to peak district. They are givens.

Shopping is the worst out of all major cities. Meadowhall take it or leave it.

I've shopped in Manchester, Leeds, Birmingham, London, Paris, New York and Toronto. Can't say that I found anything in any of them that I couldn't have bought in Sheffield.

Housing is not especially cheap, only compared to south.

So compared to about half the country it's cheap.

Pubs are OK, nothing special.

People are OK, no friendlier than any other part of the north really.

So it has equivalent pubbage and equivalent friendliness.

It's over-run by students and deadsville when they go home.

Like most university cities of a similar size then.

Sheffield has no particular draw that I can see...maybe proximity to peaks and green space brings people here?

Given that in most respects you're saying it's about the same as other cities, it would seem that non of them would have any particular draw.

I moved here from Pudsey near Leeds, and much prefer it. Where we live is a lovely quiet spot, close to woods and Graves Park, but within an easy bike ride of Town. I wouldn't go back to Leeds.

I do have a lot of friends in Meersbrook area too. Although I think crime might be slightly higher there, it sounds like you've been unlucky.

Give it a bit of time. You may learn to love it.

For the record, roads are bad everywhere, and even in the more affluent parts of the city, there are still yobs and ne'er-do-wells, that's just modern life I guess.

You're joking right? Sheffield regularly comes outside the top 20 in Uk places to shop. It doesn't compare favourably to any of those places stated.

So compared to about half the country it's cheap.

It's not cheap full stop. Wrong adjective. It's not even affordable to a lot of people.

So it has equivalent pubbage and equivalent friendliness.

Not compared to York of 150,000 people. Friendliness is same as most of North.

Like most university cities of a similar size then.

Lived in Leeds pop. 600k, 2 universities, and didn't find this to be the case at all.

Given that in most respects you're saying it's about the same as other cities,

Never said that. Sheffield has it's pluses and minuses like anywhere.
