Not impressed with life in Sheffield

Recommended Posts

This is a prime example of the behavior which seems common place here. If you are happy to live in dog s*** and rubbish then good for you, I have slightly higher hopes for my living environment however.

Thats what we class as humour, honestly not being funny, but try and understand our sense of humour and i think you will be happy here than you are.

I'd advise ignoring those that dwell under bridges. ;)

Indeed, I can they are in the minority from the responses to this thread, the majority have been positive and useful, someone always has to spoil it though don't they.

Bricks and eggs? What are you, some WW2 nazi? Lol.

Seriously, Meersbrook is one of the most unlikely places for that- even many 'rough' areas are calming down now.

The roads are cr4p, admittedly, but give us a break- there are ignorant and stuck up, pretencious gits everywhere.

I thought Sheffield would be a friendly, down to earth and great place to live and was looking forward to living here. However ever since being here I have been surprised about the reality of life here. Rubbish strewn streets like never seen anywhere else, roads so full of pot holes its highly dangerous to ride a bike, people throwing eggs and bricks at our windows, people letting their dogs poo in the middle of pavements with no shame, and yet there is a surprisingly intolerant attitude displayed by an alarming amount of Sheffield forum users.

On the positive side I have met about three people since being here who are genuine and lovely and the peak district is great, but as for Sheffield, it has been completely disappointing and definitely not somewhere I wish to continue living.

I'm sorry that your experience of Sheffield has not been positive up to now, I do hope things improve for you and that you decide to stay it's a wonderful place, but as the same with new places adapting can be hard,

Pete

Firstly, sorry that you are not enjoying Sheffield. I moved here 7 years ago having lived in a number of northern cities and Sheffield has been the best (for the things I value anyway).

Unfortunately, my experience is that there are number of people on this forum that may not make you feel welcome (as you've seen!) and it would be understandable if you thought this was reflective of Sheffield people in general. It's not. I have found people in general to be friendly, personable and welcoming with a pride in their city that isn't reflected at all on this forum.

As others have said different areas can have a very different feel, even different streets in the same area. If you don't think that area is for you then consider moving. I don't know the area you are in very well but there are certainly more vibrant areas. I think once you've made a few friends it can make a place feel better as well. Just give it a bit of time.

TL: DR Sheffield isn't that bad and will grow on you in time

What's with this recent surge in complaints about 'rubbish strewn on the streets' I've seen on Sheffield Forum the past few weeks as if it's some kind of epidemic of unemptied bins and fly-tipping? I haven't noticed any bad cases of litter recently and have always generally considered Sheffield to be fairly well kept, litter-wise?

You must walk and drive around with your eyes shut !!

You must walk round with your eyes closed. That or never leave Dore! The litter is atrocious. The city center gets cleaned, but nowhere else seems to anymore. Any patches of ground are covered in litter, not news stuff either, battered old plastic bags and faded bottles amongst the new stuff. All the trees and shrubs have plastic bags in them, it's pretty awful. 5% of the residents are too stupid or too lazy to keep on top of their rubbish, so when the bin bags they dumped next to the wheelie bin don't get taken, or they put the stuff out on the wrong day / week, they just leave it there... for ever.

People in the flats next door to me have completely overfilled their blue bins with a mix of plastics, bottles and takeaway wrappers so they won't ever get emptied. That was 2 months ago, they have just left it like that. They occasionally stuff more rubbish in but usually just chuck it on the floor.

As for the other issues. The roads are about to be fixed by Amey so expect delays and diversions, but with gradually fewer potholes, assuming they do the job properly.

The forum has a very high percentage of idiots compared to Sheffield as a hole, just stick them on the ignore list.

Dog crap? Carry a plastic bag and if you see happen pick it up on the sly, follow them home and post it through their letter box or wipe it all over their door. Only way they learn!

There are some nice places to go, and you can get out in the peak district in 15minutes. Come summer, it will all seem much better!

Im originally from Norfolk, but have lived in Staffordshire and Oxfordshire, maybe its partly due to it being my first 'city' living experience.

Nah it's mostly Sheffield love, sheffielders love to claim victim status when it's largely their own doing.

The town has big chip on it's shoulder and expects everyone else to do everything for them, it's crippled by its socialist history and refuses to move on from miner strike era.

What you're experiencing is probably what you'd experience in most cities around the country. There are always good and bad parts. I'd argue that our 'bad' parts are fewer and less gribble than other cities'. Just feel glad you're not in one of the hell hole midlands cities like Leicester or Nottingham.

Look in to moving elsewhere in Sheffield if you're not happy there. Dore, Totley, Bradfield, Beachief - all very nice and many more.

I've never even been to Dore.

I'm sorry, but the words 'any' and 'all' in the above paragraph are not being used with any accuracy, are they. Be honest ;) I think this is a case where you say I must walk around with my eyes closed but the truth is people like yourself and Banksia must walk around with a notepad stopping at every bush making a list of any strewn bits of litter ;)

It's not really possible for us to really have a discussion is it? I mean, people say there is rubbish, I say "well I haven't seen it", you say, "no, you're wrong, it's definitely there". Erm...?

I think it's fair to say that rubbish is not piling up on every street in Sheffield. It would be reported in poorly written articles in the Star if it was, not mentioned every now and again on Sheffield Forum. If household bins are overflowing then that is the residents fault. Any neighbours should take action if it's a problem.

You're right about the city centre - I live in a flat which overlooks a quiet backstreet and a patch of disused land; both are spotless.

Anyway, no offense or aggression meant with my reply neeeeeeeeeek, and many thanks for yours - Just for you and Banksia I'm gonna open my eyes on the bus to work and shall report back! :)
