Demo to Save Libraries outside Sheffield Town Hall(1.30pm Wed 3rd Apri

Recommended Posts

There is a demo against the closure of half of Sheffield's Libraries. People are meeting outside Sheffield Town Hall at 1.30pm before a big debate is due to take place at 2pm in the council chamber.

I hope there is a good turnout as I would hate to see libraries close down.

What would you like to be cut instead of the libraries? Serious question.

I hope to attend to listen to the people who oppose the plan to close libraries and then to listen to the city councillors debate the issue. I hope they can come forward with a solution.

Trim the council down considerably- too many people employed to micro-manage everything, which leads to a lot of wasted cash over and above the cash they receive in salaries.

For example, the cash spent getting various groups together to come up with ideas like closing libraries, then all the resourses used to plan and implement the closures. Possibly, all that cost more than what will be saved by closing the libraries? I don't know, I don't think anyone does, as the council tend not to make these important details available to the public.

So, cut back the council is what I'd suggest.

Hi

I have just posted a new threat about starting a campaign to save our libraries. Do you know if something is happening in your neighbourhood?

Libraries are about so much more than taking a book home to read.

If the petition is as succesful as the one to save the jessops edwardian building i wouldnt get too optimistic. It seems our council does not change their mind.I wish you well with it anyway but deciding what should be cut is a tricky decision, whatever is closed it will affect somebody.I agree some of the top earners should be trimmed back but that will not happen. Our councillors are only amateurs and are not business people they need these top earners to run the city for them.

The council could start be stopping paying consultants £800 per day , cancel the £2M refit of the town hall offices ,and scrap the stupidity that is the "Fairness Commission " ( £1M being wasted on outdated Socialist claptrap)

Dont know about the offices in the Town Hall, but the refurb of Moorfoot is in order to save money on the lease of other buildings and will save millions over the next few years, you cant crititise the Council for this.
