Not sure about its stodginess though
 Share this content via...
1978   14 #8 Posted March 10, 2013 how about better in this priority order? (1) schools (2) safe area for family (3) transport links (4) value for money (5) amenities  Can't speak for Lodge Moor - except it does seem to catch the cold winds whenever I've been - but for Bradway I'd answer;  1. Bradway School isn't as high up the tables as it used to be, but is good. Choice of secondaries, although Meadowhead is normal, with 6th Form often elsewhere if Norton College doesn't suit. Our sons did well.  2. Safe area - VERY. In Dore and Totley Ward, with most of the advantages, but without their reputation (whatever you may have heard).  3. Transport. Bus 25/25a/53 approx every 10 minutes via Meadowhead, or 97/98 every 10 minutes from bottom of hill on Abbeydale Road South - but allow average 40 minutes into town for both. Train from Dore station takes about 8 minutes to Sheffield station and is cheaper, but you may have a 2 hour wait at the wrong time of the day (3 trains into town between 8 and 8.30, returns about 5.15 and 6.15). By car it's quicker to Meadowhall than the city centre for most of the day! Handy for Chesterfield, Nottingham and all places down the M1. Not so good for going north towards Leeds/Bradford. Good rail link for Manchester commuters.  4. Value for money. There's a reasonable choice of houses for sale at present. VFM is a personal thing, but proximity to the Peak District makes it for me, within jogging distance. Good houses don't stay on sale for long.  5. Amenities. Two pubs, community hall, scout hall, variety of shops, post office, butcher, travel agent, choice of hairdressers, cards, chemist, cafes, takeaway Chinese, ironing shop, filling station, (Sainsbury's Local being planned!) access to walks, golf driving range, 3 golf courses within a mile, Abbeydale Sports Centre with all sports within walking distance.  Many residents commute to Nottingham and Derby by car, and to Manchester by train. Leeds isn't too bad, but Bradford was too far for me.  Summing up - we came here 35 years ago, expected to be here for 3-5 years and haven't moved! Having listed all the above, that must be why!
