Whats with the dodgy car for sale on Gumtree?

Recommended Posts

Been looking for a 630i and randomly checked Gumtree. Either there are really stupid people out there who don't know the value of cars, or they are nearly all dodgy. I am guessing the latter!

So whats the score? First one, claims to be fine so who would sell a a 10grand car for 6grand?

Another one with 2 pictures taken at night with no lights on or flash so you just see the outline of something that might be a car.

A 09 plate one in Nottingham for under 4grand, claims to be fine?!

So don't the police check these things out? Am almost tempted to give one of them a call and see what bizarre reason they come up with for selling stuff so cheap! So what sort of scams are they pulling?

You want a list or just the main ones that pop to mind?

It could be stolen on fake/stolen plates

It could be 'ringed'

It could have a massive 'log book loan' out on it

I would never buy a car from Gumtree.

Just not worth it.

If its too cheap its dodgy. Either the car doesn't exist, its stolen, Cat C/D or its some other scam.

OP - You seriously think the Police have time to trawl through every advert out there checking to see if its dodgy?

What on earth is a 630i? Sounds a bit more powerful than the Citroen 2CV I once owned at 602 cc's ... it didn't have an 'i' on it though (I'm jealous about this). I did once have a Ford Escort 16 V. I presume that means volts ... most cars run off twelve, so it was pretty powerful. I presume (using logic) the Bugatti Veyron runs off three-phase 450 V electricity?

Personally, I wouldn't buy any car that's stuck up a Gumtree ... the wombats will most probably've weed on the seats and eaten the steering wheel. It'd cost a hell of a lot to lower it back down too. Sikorsky helicopter hire doesn't come cheap you know.

If the cars are stolen or ringers then the police should be interested. Proactive policing seems like a good use of their time and an easy way to catch criminals. Bit like all the bike theft, probably nearly all done by the same gang, so take them out, crime falls, freeing up more police time. If these cars are stolen then it's a pretty good way of catching the people selling them. If there is some other illegal scam going on then that should also warrant investigation.

They were the ones that sprang to my mind, but if people can so openly sell cars like that with out fear of being caught the it's no wonder car crime is rife. I was wondering what else these people could be up to.

What on earth is a 630i?
BMW coupe. Big engine, low mpgs, high insurance, non-trivial maintenance, low on practicality.

(not a dissing OP, just comparing with more 'run-of-mill'/'average' cars :)).

Gumtree is a haven for scam artists, so of course all usual warning signs should be heeded and investigated.

But, and something also to be considered by OP, have you thought about the actual desirability of that model atm? (luxo-barges, coupe or otherwise, seem to be in vertical freefall these days, it seems...currently looking at A8s myself, never thought they'd get in my range so soon!)

Might explain the low(er than expected) residuals.

#justsayin' ;)
