Three Valleys beer festival 2013 - Saturday 8th June

The only words I read were

 

Columbus.....Magnum....144IBU......Galaxy......Mosaic

 

That's stop number 1 confirmed for me

 

We'll arrive at Dore Station to meet up with the Dore member of our party, so depending on how long he's likely to be, I can see us possibly making that our first drinking stop.

 

At 4.9% it's just below my mates usual threshold, but I'll try and convince them that 144IBU's will make it worthwhile.

 

It's going to be a job planning this, because there are more pubs we'll fancy trying this year because of the wider range on offer. Last year we started at the Three Tuns, walked to the Dronfield Arms followed by another walk to The Coach and Horses and finished off at Barlow.

 

This time I'm liking the look of The Horns and the Jolly Farmer as well.

 

The only pain is likely to be The Miners, where we'll have to stop to switch bus services. From previous experience they don't usually have much in the way of beer that appeals to our group.

 

Could somebody make sure the weather is booked to be sunny.

Small bit of cider news, the Woodthorpe Hall Cider at the Horns Inn is Rubie Suzy, they aren't having the Owd Barker (which will be at the Castle Inn).

 

In its place they are hoping to get Hogan's Panking Pole giving a choice of 3 artisan cider (the third one being the Mr Whitehead's Blackberry Cider).

A myriad of tropical fruit flavours in harmonious balance with an enjoyable level of hoppy bitterness, a good malt character and a very clean finish

 

Elland Eden 4.2%

Pale golden, well hopped session beer made from Chinook Hops blended with American Cascade to give a clean long fruity finish.

 

Offbeat Quirky Kiwi 4.6%

More hoppy loveliness from New Zealand with Pacific Jade, Nelson Sauvin and late hopped with Nelson Sauvin as we really like them!

 

RAW Amarillo 3.9%

Brewed in collaboration with Trulla Brewery of Sardinia. Pale and hoppy.

 

RAW Hop Chocolate 4.8%

Dark and hoppy…

 

RAW Raw Rat 5.0%

Red and hoppy, brewed in collaboration with Rat Brewery

Westons Traditional Scrumpy will be available alongside Strongbow and Thatchers Gold.

Details of the free bus services...

 

ROUTE A

will start from the Coach and Horses at 08 and 38 minutes past the hour. First bus 12:08, last bus 23:08.

Buses will call at the Green Dragon, Dronfield railway station, Dronfield Arms, Three Tuns, Jolly Farmer and Miners Arms. Change at Miners Arms for route B.

 

ROUTE B

will start from Dore & Totley station at 29 and 59 minutes past the hour. First bus 12:29, last bus 23:29.

Buses will call at Castle Inn, Hearty Oak, Rutland Arms, Horns Inn and Barlow Brewery. On the way back they will also call at the Miners Arms for connections with route A.

I'm liking the look of Tranquility and The Accomplice from the above list, both reasonably strong and pale beers.

 

Looking at the updated beer list even the Jolly Farmer and the Hearty Oak are coming to the party this year......At last pubs are realising that not everybody wants a beer between 3.5 and 4.0% strength.

 

The problem we're going to have this year is which pubs to leave out, whereas in the past the choice was which pubs to go too.

 

At the moment I'm thinking:

Miners (but maybe no drink there!)

Jolly Farmer

Three Tuns

Dronfield Arms

Coach and Horses

Bradfield Brown Cow 4.2% A rich deep chestnut coloured ale, with a beautifully smooth creamy head. A citrus aftertaste gives way to a long dry finish.

Bradfield Farmers Blonde 4.0% Pale, brilliant blonde beer, citrus and summer fruit aromas, refreshing.

Steel City Angel of Death 4.9% Pale & Hoppy beer brewed with the new American Mosaic hop, expect fruit salad notes to the taste. Very bitter.

Wood Street Euptellia 4.2% Pale, zingy and zesty summertime ale with a citrussy hopped finish

Wood Street Honey Locust 4.6% Golden mild honey beer, a well balanced ale with a hint of sweetness

Wood Street Wood Street Bitter 4.0% Traditional malty bitter, smooth on the palate.

no beer list as yet, they will have 6 cask ales on.

 

There will be a charity horse race event at 4pm

 

Live music from the Crashers at 9pm

Had a Mallinson`s Mosiac beer, I think, and it was the only one of their`s that I didn`t like! Nevermind, I`m off to the Holy Grove in Huddersfield tomorrow!

If you go in the Harlequin, they have bottles of Kernel Mosaic IPA, which is excellent.

 

As to 3 Valleys, I'm intending to visit Barlow Brewery, the Horns Inn (which was excellent last year), maybe make it to the Rutland Arms & the Jolly Farmer as well as I didn't last year.

I would suggest getting the bus from Barlow to the Hearty Oak then walking down to the Miners (or even the Jolly). Also don't forget its walkable from the Three Tuns to the Dronfield Arms.

Last year we walked from the Three Tuns to the Dronfield Arms and then from there to the Coach and Horses......I suspect we'll probably do the same again this year.

 

With the Three Tuns and Coach and Horses being our main pubs due to range of beers, I think we'll only have time to do one of either the Jolly Farmer or the Hearty Oak....Both have got a good selection this year.

A list of almost all the beers expected to be on the bars across the 11 venues is below. Note not all the Coach & Horse's beers are included as they are not yet all finalised and the 6 beers at the Miners Arms are not included in the list either.

 

A free bus will run between all the venues every half hour, also calling at railway stations at Dronfield (Leeds-Nottingham line) and Dore & Totley (Sheffield-Manchester line).

You can print out what you need from the website before you head out or alternatively programmes will be available on the day for 50p a copy.
