My daughters boyfriend was arrested 6 months ago the case is now over but because he was at her property they took her mobile her daughters mobile and thier laptops to see if there was any evidence on them which there was not.She has phoned constantly requesting the return of the items cannot get the arresting officer on the phone and no supervisor is available.

Anyone got any ideas as she is paying for the phones on contract but cant use them:huh:

Phone the police and have the officer arrested for theft.

Unless there was evidence on your daughters phone and laptop then the police would have no reason to have kept them at all once they had been examined . The fact that your daughter has been paying the contract on the phone for 6 months adds to the poor service from the police . My advice would be to make a formal complaint to the police and claim for the amount of money your daughter paid on the phone contract . There may of course be another side to this which would change my advice .One final thought hopefully your daughter will choose her boyfriends more carefully in future assuming she isn't still with the one who caused her the hassle.

Firstly I'm glad you have got the problem sorted :)

Just in relation to the above - it does not matter if she has been paying the contract on the phone or not. The police are not liable to give any compensation for that at all as the phone and laptop have been seized as evidence and as such can be held onto by police until their need for them is over.

As a side note for you, many items of electrical equipment that need to be forensically examined can take much longer than a year due to the processes that need to be done on them and a severe lack of trained specialists to do it so 6 months is not at all bad.

So, whilst you say the OP should make a formal complaint - the items have been seized, examined and now returned - without knowing the in's and out of the case in relation to when it was finished, if there were any appeals etc it is always difficult to say if the property should have been returned sooner or not.

What I think you are saying Mickeyr1234 is there is a huge backlog due to lack of staff that means some items take over a year to be looked at . I would be interested in what 'process' takes over a year to bring up evidence . If the police are doing their job correctly it does not take 6 months to find evidence . The police are doing a great job and I support them 100% BUT there are some officers who think it OK to mess people about and hanging onto property longer than necessary comes into that category . If there was a need for the items as evidence by all means retain them but if they weren't needed for evidence they should have gone back straight away . Sounds a bit like ' we'll p**s his girlfriend about to me .

I got my computer back from the police after they had it for 2 years. The sad and annoying thing is that I can no longer access my own photographs. I contacted the arresting police officer and she said that she will get back to me about it. That was 3 months ago!!! Everytime I ring her, I get the same reply or I have to leave a message on her answerphone.

Yes, I have one. If the IPCC are responsible for policing the police, why have they appeared in the media this week admitting that their organisation is not up to standard, in light of the recent phone hacking senario?

If they cannot control the police, who is controlling them?

The police in this country are a shambles, which is sad as there are a lot of good people in the force, but sadly there seems to be a bad smell in there too.
