Living in Walkley

Recommended Posts

We moved recently from Walkley (above Walkley Lane) to Walkley (below Walkley Lane).

We found that prices above Walkley Lane tended to be more expensive for what you got. A terrace on Palm St or Freedom Rd will go for well over £135,000-£140,000 but a semi detached a bit lower down towards Hillsborough will go for less, just because it's seen more as "Hillsborough" then Walkley.

We love it.

The shops on South Road are great. Chris Beech's butcher's shop is the most fantastic place. They do everything, not just meat, veg, fish, deli etc. They're a fantastic independent retailer.

When we needed to move last year there was nowhere else other than Walkley we wanted to move to.

Do you mean Walkley Road?

Walkley *Lane* runs from just past the Crown/Florist (after walkley rd has veered left - though the road seem the same one) down to Hillsborough.

Walkley *Road* starts at end of south road and goes down the hill towards Hillsborough but then turns left after Crown/Florist - its parallel with South rd with palm st, freedom rd etc running between them.

it gets very confusing & most people get the "road" and "lane" mixed up!

It gets even more confusing because we are just about at the bend when Road becomes Lane, but our back garden is technically on Lane.

Haz, you won't go far wrong with Walkely. There are lots of ex-graduate/professionals like you who buy their first place in the area. I was one of them when I bought my first house there. Spent 12 happy years. Great neighbours, good transport links. Better value than Crookes, but similar housing. Pick your road carefully, some are rat-runs (check parking and traffic at different times of the day).

In what way?

Arson, car thefts. "Yoofs" causing trouble. Joy riding. Noise from the Firwood at very late chucking out time. We moved to Hillsborough, which is a traffic nightmare but much quieter.

The Cottage used to be ultra respectable,a Tetley house.I am guessing you were near Burnaby?

I've lived not too far away for over 10 years & never noticed too many problems - especially from Firwood. The Bellevue used to get a bit lairy but thats been closed for a few years (as have most of the corner pubs) - but its nowt like Hillsborough in full flow on sat night!

Yes, near Burnaby. We live nearer Malin Bridge, so don't get bothered by the noise in Hillsborough centre.

Oh, and the schools are going through a very rough patch.

Oh, and if you live in Walkley you are not far from one of the best pubs in Sheffield, The Blake Hotel.

Get your kids to Malin Bridge if you can-seems well regarded.
