13.01.13 - Sheffield Forum 11-3 Wheel Athletic (League Cup R2)

Recommended Posts

Sheffield Forum cruised into the last 16 with a convincing win over Wheel Athletic. Few changes had to be made to the team for the first game of 2013 as keeper Adam Smith was unavailable so Joe Appleby took his place between the sticks. Ashley Proctor came in for Nathan Jenkins and Jordan Gladwin returned to the squad.

Forum got off to a very bright start with Joe Neate flashing a shot narrowly over the bar just minutes into the game and the first goal soon followed. Tom Gray obtained possession in the middle of the park and played a great ball wide for centre back Jason Bowden to charge on to. He played in a perfect cross for Shane Middlebrook to head into the top left corner of the net.

Middlebrook then hit a second as Shaun Baugh played a ball straight through the middle of the Wheel defence leaving Middlebrook clear to put the ball away.

Forum were easily dealing with Wheels attack and added a third midway through the first half. Zak Crownshaw made an excellent run down the right and got past 2 defenders before pulling the ball back for Daniel Sheedy to hit his 17th goal of the season.

Forum were not sitting back and Middlebrook grabbed his hat trick after just half an hour. Liam Wales played the ball forward, Tom Gray let it run with a clever dummy and Middlebrook picked it up, rounded the keeper and smashed the ball home.

The home side were in complete control with Wheel having only 1 real threat, a free kick floated in to the area evaded everybody but Joe Appleby managed to tip it over the bar.

A fifth was added before half time, Daniel Sheedy hit an excellent curling shot from 20 yards out which beat the keeper but bounced back off the bar...falling kindly to Middlebrook to hit his fourth of the game and 16th of the season.

The second continued in very much the same way as Crownshaw threaded a wonderful ball through for Jason Bowden to run on to a finish for 6.

Second half sub Andy Coates then played in Liam Wales down the left, Wales turned his man and clinically finished into the far corner.

Gladwin got his first goal for the club too as centre back Eifion Griffiths went on a storming run down the pitch and laid it on a plate for Gladwin to knock in for 8.

Wheel then seemed to give up defending a little in favour of getting something back as they eventually netted to prevent a clean sheet for Forum. But there was certainly no comeback as Andy Coates smashed home into the top right corner following a half clearance from a corner.

Wheel scored again to make it 9-2 but Wales made it double figures. Crownshaw took a quick throw to Gladwin who turned and played in Wales to finish for his second.

All credit to Wheel who never gave it up and continued to attack and netted a third goal but Forum finished the scoring with an 11th as the referee pointed to the spot for a foul in the area. Wales claimed the ball and duly converted to seal his first hat trick of the season.

A very good performance from the team today and positive start to 2013.
