Chris76 Â Â 10 #325 Posted May 4, 2008 Crikey your Drs. was up to date wasn't it for the times. I remember that Doctors. My sisters and my friends used to go to Beck Road Sunday School, just opposite Dr. Marcus'. We once held up a manhole cover in the grounds of the sunday school and let it go before my sister did. She ended up with part of her finger missing. All her fingers on her left hand are the same size. Her middle one being sliced off on the top. Don't know if you remember or Know Mr. and Mrs. Hodge who used to run the sunday School, or Mrs Baker. She Had a daughter called Mary (for real). They used to put on shows which I always had to be in. Do you also know the Aubrey family who used to live onSicey avenue just up from Dr. Marcus. Saw Rose about a year ago. They all seem to have ginger hair. Quite a large family. Fast Runner   10 #326 Posted May 4, 2008 Beck Road Sunday School I can just remember it, I have been in a concert there, and remember changing into costumes in the back room. What I remember is the wooden floor boards in every room, and the double doors to enter the buidling. I must have gone to the Sunday School at some stage but I am unable to remember much about that. Dr Marcus was the only doctor at that practice, a smallish figure with black hair. Years later a dental practice occupied the building. It's so good to read this Forum as it does bring back so many memories.
 Share this content via...
Chris76 Â Â 10 #327 Posted May 5, 2008 I remember too all the wooden floors. I remember also getting shut in the toilets down the end of the corridor and I was too small to reach up to the handle to get out. I thought I was locked in there forever. I remember also that you had an attendance card which was stamped with a star and if you got full attendance you got the chance to be May Queen on Whit Sunday. We all used to follow a lorry with the May Queen on it, carrying a banner with Beck Road Sunday School on down to Firth Park where other Sunday Schools went. We all sang hymns etc. and usually it was a nice day. Families made a day of it then. What's happened to all that community spirit and friendliness.! Chris76 Â Â 10 #328 Posted May 5, 2008 p.s. Also remember about the plays I was a vicar once, supposedly marrying a girl called Jacqueline Rossiter and another girl. My sister was a mama doll, wearing a straw type hat. We've also been fairies in a play but don't recall that play. I do remember going to the fire fairies group a few times. I think that was held down there. You had to wear a red cardigan. (similar to the brownies). Didn't go many times though.
 Share this content via...
David Price   10 #329 Posted May 5, 2008 For David Price, my sister (Fast Runner) and I are trying to put a face to your name, it's so frustrating as you appear to know who we are but we cannot place you.You say you knew me from Church, what was the connection: choir, servers, Sunday School or youth club. I was at some point involved with all. The people I did hang around with early on were Brian (Cherry)Williams, Doug & Michael Thompson and later Sue & Janet Ellis, Roger Storie, Alan Chittenden, Faye Longmore, Ian White,Bob Wood and Vicky Hall as well as many more I can't readily recall. I knew the vicar Philip Cawood very well but fell out big time with his successor the Rev Scott. I also worked closely with Mr. Henry Cooper when he ran a Sunday afternoon club for teenagers. Both at the time and in hindsight those were great times community spirit was well and truly vibrant loved every minute. Do let me know where you fitted in and roughly what dates we are in. Ted Hills  Lets try to re-boot the memories  I lived in Kepple Road - near the Penguin - my connection with St C's was that we used to go to the Youth Club -I think from about 1957 when I was at Central Technical School - I was also a regular member of the Church from about 1960 to when we got married in 1964 then we moved away to Gleedless. Both Philip Cawood and Philip Rodgers officiated at our Wedding where we had the Choir and full Comminion ( which was rare in those days) I really remember you from Church. But I knew your sister and Linda Hodgetts around 1958 - other local names that I remember were Jean Stockings and Jean Clarke, Linda Farr. I was a keen cyclist belonging to a couple of Sheffield Clubs Hope that this helps
 Share this content via...
clown   10 #330 Posted May 6, 2008 Hi every one someone has recalled Beck Road Chapel. I previously started a thread for this chapel asking if any one out there ever attended the chapel or its functions. ie.Boys Brigade, Life Boys, Girls Brigade, Home Fire Girls. Fire Faries.Sunday Fellowship, Youth Club,or Football Team during the 50s and 60s. Mr and Mrs Hodge sertainly were involved in the sunday school during this time. The Boys Brigade (23rd company) Was very well attended during this period, and is still in existance to day, although the Chapel has closed, it is now based at St Chritopher on Bellhouse Road ,the Captain being Mr Barry Trigg who was a lad in company in the late 50s. The Aubries kids all attended the sunday school and other activities. Occasionally reunions have taken place the last one was organised by Graham Johns sister just after Grahams death. Joan Hunt and her husband Keith Maslin were over from Canada. The reunion took place at Hadfield House Lane Methodist since Beck Road had been closed. David Price   10 #331 Posted May 7, 2008 Previous posts have mentioned Grange Lane Station, Steam trains, Basket Bridge LNER & LMS tracks, the dyke and football pitch. The two piccie links I offer consist of Grange Lane signal box with double box operated gates taken before the line got downgraded to a single manual gate box.    A steam train plodding up the Blackburn Valley between Grange Lane & Ecclesfield East Stations. You can see the Basket Bridge and the football pitch in the dyke area to the right of the bridge. The LNER (GCR) tracks are on the left and the LMS tracks are on the right. The LMS line can be seen bending to the right towards Woolley Woods.    Hope this conjures up some memories.  Great to see the photos, do you have any more?; I used to visit the signal box as a child, my uncle ( Alex Smith) worked in the box, There was a "boss" signalman ( I think called Len) and at that time a lady who looked after the gates. Every Friday afternoon all the signal box floors had to be scrubbed and the brass polished ready for an inspection by Mr Licorice who was in charge of the station. At the time this was a busy Branch Line and to the south there was a shunting yard. At one time my uncle was worried for his job because half a dozen wagons had run away from him and ended up in the river! My Grandfather also worked on the railway, he was a brass fitter by trade but in the late 20's went to the GCR as a wheel tapper. I also have fond memories of the LMS line, waiting for the Thames Clyde Express - down at 3.30 and up-line at 1.30 if it was ever on time! Usually pulled by a Jube or a Black Five. There was also a milk train that went down line at 11.35 pm and occaisionally in the school holidays I'd get my dad to take me to see that. We train buffs were ( and remain) a sad lot! Ted Hills   10 #334 Posted May 11, 2008 For David Price: My sister and I are still struggling to put a face to your name which is so frustrating. The names you mentioned don't mean anything to me. You were involved with the church from 1960 - 1964 but I did national service from Aug 60 - 62 so wouldn't have been around then. I did know Philip Cawood and Philip Rogers very well. It could be that we simply moved in different circles of friends and didn't comminicate directly.Ted Hills
 Share this content via...

pedro1 Â Â 10 #336 Posted May 13, 2008 Just been thinking of something me and my mate used to get up to on the shiregreen. On Perkyn terrace there was a large green metal box, i think it had something to to with the telephones. We used to climb on top of it and launch ourselves into the nearest privet hedge much to the annoyance of the owner.
 Share this content via...
