Don Valley Stadium to close?

Recommended Posts

......Has the stadium and the council been pro-active enough in securing big events? Go to their website and it reads like nothing more than a run of the mill gym.

Have the pygmies that sit on Sheffield City Council ever been pro-active in anything other than running the city down? Keep voting Labour!

We tried to book a massive band there for this summer and planned another one next year. The costs and extra's of hiring Don Valley are the exact reasons why its not booked for big gigs.

Anyhow, go to Mosborough music festival this year, Reverend & The makers and Paul Heaton booked, as is Jon Windle and John Reilly

With regards to costs for DVS one of my work colleagues is involved at a decent level with athletics in Doncaster. He has said if anyone wants to use DVS the costs are astronomical and puts people off - even at a level such as a South Yorkshire athletics event. Perhaps costs need to be lowered and it would be utilised more.

Sadly looking at the costs and the fact it is so rarely used and even when it is its not really for what it was designed for I think closing it and spending the money on more successful sporting projects is probably the right decision.

Surely there the decision to close DVS has an element of headline grabbing attraction for the council. A huge shot fired at the government with emotions and interest still high following the Olympics, the Ennis connection, etc.

A reactionary decision that they will, we might find, reverse, in time (I may be cynical, but this may well be the plan all along).

But for now, its a great marketing tool in the political war. Perfectly moulded for tabloid rage. The stadium is just a pawn in the game.

Whilst the BBC confirmed the move this morning, the staff of DVS hadn't been told. They found out through Radio Sheffield, Look North or the BBC Website to their horror that they would lose their jobs. I think it's disgusting that the news was made public before the people who it will affect were told.

Such a loss to sheffield. As a volunteer steward at many sporting events in sheffield, I have been to don valley loads of times and its such a lovely place with excellent facilities.

Something going off here. Sheffield Star said that budget cut proposals were up for discussion and decision made by end of March. Did anyone see this ?

Inept council. Inept Planning Dept. Misguided vision.

One embarrassment after another. Major retailers will start to bypass the city. Just as major events planners do, just as many concert promoters do. Just as investors do. Just as developers do.

But its always someone elses fault isn't it.

The Council should be hanging their heads in shame for building it in the first place with no thought to what use it would be after the Student games. It's closing because hardly anybody uses it.

I probably don't understand the financial intricacies, but can any one explain why if the council had reserves of £60 million last year and has £167 million this year, why they can't use some of this to keep services ticking over until the financial situation improves?

Will the financial situation improve a great deal in South Yorkshire?
