Recommended Posts

Can anyone think of any buildings in sheffield city centre that have been intentionally demolished that you think should have been saved?

Wards brewery, Ecclesall Rd. Not demolished but...Lets say removed and converted into yuppy flats...Gross descersation that should never have been allowed to happen..S.C.C. to blame for that. How much did they get?...

Not sure why SCC would have got any monies but no doubt Vaux did and what would we have done with a redundant brewery

Yes all very nice but what are we doing with them.

If an owner leaves/closes down - then what?

Who pays for the upkeep, ongoing maintenance, repairs, rates and taxes.

Do they just sit there empty? Do you expect companies to be FORCED into using them rather than building their own? If so who compensates the extra cost of converting an old building vs knocking up a new one. Who is responsible and pays for the changes required and expenses of complying with new legislation, safety codes, fire regulations, disability access etc.

Its all well and good campaigning for things to be saved but they have to have a purpose to pay the bills. Its no good keeping something unoccupied and not serving a purpose just because it looks pretty.

Someone always has to pay the bill at the end of it.

Unlike places like York, Chester and Edinburgh and London we are not and never will be a major tourist city. Those tourists that do come are not flocking to the city for our historical importance and architecture.

Vaux did'nt own the LAND. S.C.C did. Vaux screwed the wards workers and blocked a management buyout and S.C.C. SOLD the land to the highest bidder. How low can you go?. S.C.C. Does NOT consist of sheffield people.

If it did we would'nt be where we are now.

I thought the Classic had a severe fire hence the end of the Indus and although a regular in The Albert I think it had become structurally unsound.

I stand corrected but surely after Vaux had made the decision to close both breweries and reject the management buy out then the site presumably became redundant

Apparently, the late Dave Wickett wanted to buy Wards Brewery,,to use as a brewery. He was refused.

Because we don't get flocks of tourists coming to see them that's no reason to knock them down for no valid reason

Perhaps SCC didn't want a smelly brewery smack in the middle of town anymore.

Mind you the smell from those flats across the road would probably overpower it anyway :hihi:
