All the locals will be moaning about the whities riding around on bikes and saying that they should be sent to some other country.

Why send the bikes away?

Bikes are nice.

Sheffielder's will have all moved to the outer reaches (chesterfield, penistone, barnsley, rotherham) and they'll be a new hole in the road as all the ones we have, will join together to create a super hole and a huge fish tank will be in it!

In a way the direction of the city is in the balance; the Sheffield Chamber Of Commerce want it to be an industrial/engineering place again, or it could be characterised as a studenty and public sector place.

I hope it becomes all of those things.

I think its seriously possible. Sheffield Uni is renowned for its Engineering Dept and the city has huge possibilities as a Digital innovator. Given we retain over 18% of the students who come into the city, and they gain employment and settle here, this will encourage future generations of well educated citizens. If the Govt got their act together and put a Dept in each city ie Health, Education etc, then if Sheffield were to be one of these sites then it would tick all your boxes. :)

we've lost the coal mines and the steel manufacturing and the population is falling.

Mines with no coal ain't much good.

Coal is a finite resource, deal with it.

Steel manufacturing is still going on, only with far fewer people required.

Whilst heavy steel production has now all but ceased in Sheffield, the actual output of steel is greater than ever. however, it is now mainly stainless and special steels, the production of which is kinder to the local environment.

Was there ever a time when Sheffield was well thought of? Here is George Orwell writing in The Road to Wigan Pier.

Sheffield, I suppose, could justly claim to be called the ugliest town in the Old World: its inhabitants, who want it to be pre-eminent in everything, very likely do make that claim for it. It has a population of half a million and it contains fewer decent buildings than the average East Anglian village of five hundred.

As for 100 years from now. Well, if the impact of Peak Oil is anything like as expected, the population may be down to the 10,000 it used to be.

Perhaps people will be growing cabbages in what was Endcliffe Park.
