It all depends what you want from the nursery, to describe it as "best".

For example, do you need specialist facilities? (EG does your child have special needs with learning difficulties or physical disabilities?) if so then *XYZ* nursery would be the best. do you need extended hours, say because you work an odd shift pattern? well, *XYZ wouldn't be the best, it would be *abc* nursery.

You also need to look at the ofsted reports for, and have a look round a selection of nurseries to get a feel of the atmosphere, you need to think about:-

Do the kiddies look happy?

Do you see or sense any "issues" about the care the kiddies receive? (sometimes you can get a "sixth sense" if something feels "wrong")

Does it feel safe? (No obvious dangers or hazards for the kiddies?)

Is there a vibrant and stimulating atmosphere?

What do you see of the kiddies attitudes to the staff, and vice-versa?

Do you feel confident that you can leave your child in safety there?

Do they insist that your child is toilet trained and/or is independent when dressing/feeding themselves? (an age-relevant requirement, of course. would not apply to infants)

Are you happy with the child-to-staff ratio? Ddoes it seem like too many children for the number of staff? Or is it practically empty with three or four kiddies, and twenty staff?

what are their policies about providing meals for the child? Can they cater if your child has a dietary need or allergy (EG lactose intolerance, Gluten intolerance or nut allergy?)

that's somethnig to think about, for a start.

You also need to think about the distance from your home or work to the nursery, and travelling times/ routes, and how much of a toll it might take on a young child to travel that route each day. - and importantly, how easily you can get back to the nursery if your little one should take poorly.(God forbid!)

Primrose children's centre, s6. My little one had been going there for over a year and he loves it. The staff are lovely and the facilities are great.

To add to Plain Talker's very comprehensive response, I would also add:

Look at the staff. Are they happy and engaged with the kids? What's the staff turnover like? Are at least some of them old enough to have had a few years experience in the job?

Also, if you find a place that ticks all the other boxes for you, don' t get too hung up on Ofsted - as long as it's met the requirements in all the categories that matter. Remember, the inpectors only see the place for a few hours.

Personal reccomendations are also very important so talk to friends, colleagues etc.

Your post quoted a removed post, so it had to go with the removal.

I recommend Grapevine on Queen's Road / London Road corner, but again it depends on where you are looking, and what you want out of it
