mogwai84 Â Â 10 #376 Posted July 30, 2013 If the LSE wanted to knock down St Pauls would London council let them? Â The LSE doesn't own St Pauls. Â The LSE has restored some buildings, and demolished some. Â It's what universities do. If the old building was viable then they would have kept it, but it wasn't. Seeing as part of the Jessops has been restored really nicely as the Music Dept, I don't get what the fuss is about really.
 Share this content via...

No User Name   10 #379 Posted July 30, 2013 they were a eye sore jessops wasnt  So you would want a building to be left up that wasnt being used, was unfit for purpose, nobody wanted to spend money on it because it would have cose a shedload, and was stopping a major Sheffield employer from creating many jobs and putting money back into the city, all because it "looked nice"?  Thank the Lord you dont make planning decisions then! Then again, you might have allowed Next to build at Meadowhall from the outset
 Share this content via...
Bypassblade   10 #380 Posted July 30, 2013 Yeah but the roolz say that nobody was born there, so it isnt important  Perhaps nobody was born there but they were iconic, ask ANYONE what the 1st thing they looked for coming into Sheffield that way & they'd say the towers.  I'm sorry but people nowadays just don't have an affinity with Sheffield's great history, and are just too quick to say knock it down. I think you'll find that modern is not always best, we've just spent the weekend in Chester & I defy anyone to make buildings as beautiful as they have; or York for that matter.  York Minster is probably one of THE most beautiful places in this great country of ours, and Jessops could have been preserved due to it's long history and what it brought to our city. Bypassblade   10 #382 Posted July 30, 2013 Preserved by who? Who was willing to spend the money on it? Answer = nobody.  Hold on you said or someone that someone is spending 80m on doing the area up, why could they not incorporate the old building into the new, these builders nowadays are good at that.  Our heritage should be preserved not demolished, modern architecture is awful now, imagine Paris council knocking down Notre Dame they would in this chuffing city. Bypassblade   10 #384 Posted July 30, 2013 It has already been said the building was "unfit for purpose".  That's as may be, but they can be renovated, unfit for purpose now but with a little foresight they could do it. How do you think they went on with buildings after the war, not everyone was demolished and look at Salisbury's is it, on London Road.  They built a new store but kept the original arch from the Lacarno or what ever previous incarnation it was.
