Jessops demolition megathread

Recommended Posts

Its also worth noting that we should keep some of sheffields heritage instead of eradicating it for the next generation.A lot of children are interested in sheffields history as i was as a child,i loved history it was my favourite subject. Our teacher was very enthusiastic and used to take us to old buildings.I remember going to shepherds wheel and seeing it working. Its not going to be the same for the children if all we can show them is a picture and say this is where this building used to be.Weve lost too much of our heritage partly due to the luftwaffe and SCC,it has to stop!.

Again why was it listed?

Beat's me why it is listed given that the definition for grade II listing is for buildings that are nationally important and of special interest.

Jessops "nationally important"? Never was, never will be.

I shudder to think what York would look like had their CC followed the SCC ethos of town planning and architecture

Yes - the old Jessops Hospital is one of the top ten places to visit for Japanese tourists in the UK isn't it.

How does the university having to spend an extra 8 million effect you.Just wondering.

I want this city to improve. Attracting a world class facility like this will help that (and attract a lot of quality).

Forcing the University to build a smaller structure to accommodate the need to preserve a bit of Edwardian Hospital will hamper that.

Yet this small facility will cost them an extra eight million pounds. Does that seem right? Is that a price worth paying?

So park hill flats are of national importance and, castle house. We have a building at work thats listed and were probably the only ones in sheffield that know that so its hardly of national importance.

Are the two mutually incompatible? It seems-again from what I've read- that Jessops could be kept and the university get the world class facility it needs and which would be beneficial to the city. Nobody has ever regarded Jessops as a tourist attraction.

Like you I want to see the city progress, as it has done, thanks to a great degree because of the universities but I don't want to see Sheffield regress, again by disregarding part, a valuable part of its scanty heritage.

Attract a lot of quality, quality of what.Do we seriously think this is going to kickstart manufacturing in sheffield again.Highly unlikely, most of the students will probably leave sheffield and take their new skills to another part of the world.

They could co-exist (just with a smaller University facility that costs an extra eight million quid).

Of quality engineering jobs - like the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (which is where it is because of the engineering/ manufacturing talent that we have in Sheffield).

That should be the future that we aim for (rather than just a NEXT and an IKEA). I want Sheffield to attract the kind of jobs that you get in the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre instead.

Its a good thing but i dont think its going to be the saviour of sheffields unemployed, its a specialist industry that requires highly intelligent people.Id have got excited if it was going to be something that gets sheffields unemployed working.I still dont think its enough to warrant demolishing a listed building.

Yes it is all about personal choice and thats good that were all different.I liked the art deco factory that was on penistone road and the tinsley towers but others hated them.

Why should the university be forced to spend all of this extra money for the sake of a couple of thousand people signing a petition?

Because it was listed when the University bought it?
