Jessops demolition megathread

Recommended Posts

I understand the final say will lie with the council ie granting permission to demolish a listed building.

No, not the Council - it'll be English Heritage.

Yep.

And the University - they have alternative plans (to rennovate it) if there's too much bad PR/animosity in the city.

a very useful update on the university's plans is given on skyscraper city- see sheffield metro district developments. This is a very well informed site as regards sheffield developments but as you may expect some of the contributors are not conservation inclined in this particular case.

As many will know the Cutlers Company is an extremely long established institution members of which are many of the the heads of Sheffield industry. As such one of its repsonsibilities is the the guardianship of the heritage and traditions of Sheffield.

Yesterday the Chief Executive circulated members (Freemen) seeking support for the prosposal to demolish the Edwardian wing of Jessop Hospital.

The reason as set out by the Chief Executive is:

There is clearly some resistance to this but the benefit of the new facility seems to significantly outweigh any loss to heritage as a result of the demolition of these two wings, particularly as the Victorian part of the hospital has been restored by the University.

As part of his circular he even attaches a draft letter supporting the move which members are encouraged to address to the Estates Management Department at the university. It is not clear on whose authority the circular was sent.

Those opposing the demolition should be aware of this course of action taken by the Cutlers Company and may similarly wish to address their concerns to the university. The course of action of the Cutlers Company is not one supported by all members.

It looks as though the Vice Chancellor is trying to rope in some of his cronies to support the demolition project. Could it be that the University is getting anxious? With The Victorian Society and the Hallam Historic Buildings Society lined up against them, along with a lot of opposition expressed in the press, they are right to be worried.

I understand they intend to submit the planning application in August, timed to minimise internal oposition within the University. We will have to make sure they dont sneak it in under the radar.......

Says who? Why should this total anachronism of an organisation have any say in the future development of the city?

Whilst browsing I noticed the latest information on the opposition to build houses in the vicinity of Wincobank Hillfort having been sucessful at this stage. I wonder if a similiar online petition opposing the proposed demolition of Jessops Edwardian addition would recieve the same support? The initial thread's on both issues have had quite similiar numbers of views.
