it's an eyesore , what little architectural merit it may have had has been lost by the huge variety of additions and changes made over it's life as a working hospital, very few hospitals are deemed worthy of listing and even then it's only parts and at grade 2 - as is the case with the Jessop site

 

as for the listing of modern buildings, if a building exemplifies it's type and is relatively unmolested from it's original form then it might well be listed

From the look of the report in the Telegraph, the university is putting its toe in the water before submitting the planning application. If the demolition plan looks to be controversial they may choose one of the options which involves retaining the Edwardian wing.

A few people writing to the local papers and copying in the vice-chancellor (vc@sheffield.ac.uk) might well head the proposal off at the pass.

The challenge is to get the greatest amount of usable space out of the Jessop East site. The University has been through a series of plans to take the proposed development forward. This process has allowed the University to understand the challenges and opportunities that the site can deliver and has led to the conclusion that developing the whole site, which would involve demolition of the Edwardian extension of the old Jessop Hospital, is the preferred option. The Edwardian wing previously housed gynaecology and outpatient services, with labour wards located in the Victorian wing and St George’s wing.

 

This is not without its difficulties as the extension is covered by a single English Heritage listing for the Jessop Victorian and later Edwardian extension.

I believe the Edwardian part was demolised a few years ago and its the Victorian part they now are talking about. Could be wrong|

They renovated the Victorian bit

The Edwardian bit is the bit currently boarded up and whose future is in jeapody.

Staff are free to join members of the public at two exhibitions, one at Jessop West Exhibition Space from 12-6pm on 29 May and another on 30 May at the Quaker Meeting House at 10 St James Street near the Cathedral, 12-6pm.

I understand the final say will lie with the council ie granting permission to demolish a listed building.
