boothy1987 10 #26 Posted December 19, 2012 She didn't put as many hours as my old man, driving an H.G.V vehicle up and down the length and breadth of the country for (yes!) 55 years and is now struggling on a state pension! Im just signed up on here purely to reply to this immense amount of jealousy, maybe your dad should have put his mind to something more that just driving and proceed to then train to be the best in the world at a something that entertains millions of people around the world, then he might not be living off state pension. The only luck that Jess has had along the way is the fact that she is also absolutely stunning which is why they picked her to be the face of the games, everything else is pure hard work and dedication to something that is the complete opposite to sittin on your backside driving up and down motorways. RobWilson 10 #27 Posted December 19, 2012 The British (despite our ongoing self delusion) have always been recognised as a bunch of servile twerps, how quick we are to reinforce this perception! We desperately need to elevate people to godlike 'celeb' status so we can fall at their feet and let them dictate to us what we wear, how to have our hair etc, continually lavishing them with more money and position (knighthoods, awards, keys to the city etc) to reinforce the whole process. We have lost any national self esteem long ago and please, please don't mention the olympics! Would you care to mention a country that does not treat its best sportspeople as heroes, or where they are not financially rewarded? NESouljah 10 #28 Posted December 19, 2012 I think people are missunderstanding beefface for jealousy. This is not the case and I am in agreement with him/her. Beefface is simply saying why should these sports people have all that money, nice cars £1m houses when there are much more deserving people, his father for instance. There are firemen, youth workers, nurses, teachers who do more for people and are more of a service to us than these sports stars who are simply playing a game they enjoy and are good at that do not have £1m houses but are more deserving of these rewards
 Share this content via...
KeefisGod 10 #29 Posted December 19, 2012 Looks like 'our Jess' is moving up in the world on a big earner and has bought a new house... good luck to her and at least she's staying in Sheffield http://www.sheffieldnewsandsport.com...den-girl-jess/ Wow!!!! as a new comer to SF I never realised what I thought was just a light informative post could start a civil war ... there's a bit of vitriol about today ---------- Post added 19-12-2012 at 10:23 ---------- I think people are missunderstanding beefface for jealousy. I've just thought of one... let's call it Communism/Soviet state socialism or maybe Maoism where we can all be equal and live happily ever after in a sort of non-elitist nirvana and we all share the burden and rewards equally... I wonder if anybody else has ever thought of that?
 Share this content via...
boothy1987 10 #30 Posted December 19, 2012 I think people are missunderstanding beefface for jealousy. This is not the case and I am in agreement with him/her. There are firemen, youth workers, nurses, teachers who do more for people and are more of a service to us than these sports stars who are simply playing a game they enjoy and are good at that do not have £1m houses but are more deserving of these rewards Ok, I understand the fireman, armed forces, nurses etc... but there is nothing we can do about that. If anyone has ever paid money to watch a sporting event, a concert or paid any money at all to be entertained then to me they are contradicting themselves as that money is going towards paying these people. I certainly pay money to go and watch sport or events where I am entertained and because of the amount of people that feel the same as me, the people who entertain are paid accordingly, its just very unfortunate that for the other people such as armed forces etc... that their line of work doesnt entertain people to make then go and watch. As for the olympics though, its incredible how they represented our country which such pride and it did do alot for the morale of the majority of the UK. Anyone who is still moaning how much it cost or moaning about anything in general about it, in my mind is simply jealous. For over a month people were gripped and excited about both the olympics and paralympics and it lifted the spirits of millions! Tomm06 12 #31 Posted December 19, 2012 Sorry, but any society or culture that can reward someone so generously, for simply excelling for a relatively short time in what they enjoy doing most, while simultaniously neglecting people who have spent a lifetime excelling in what they enjoy doing least, is fundamentally flawed! My dad does the same thing for a living, and personally, I don't think they get the credit HGV drivers deserve, without them, the country would be at a stand still - how would we get our good? But that still doesn't mean your dad (or mine) deserves anything more than a state pension for, lets be honest, sitting down driving for the majority of the week. Plus, how can you compare what Jessica Ennis did, to driving a wagon? What your father did is quite admirable mind, but then again, so is what Ennis did. But what I want to know the most is; Why is her buying a house in Sheffield news? Whether she lives in Sheffield or Portugal, it makes no difference to me, or the city in fact. Just one of the things that passes for journalism these days I guess.
 Share this content via...
SevenRivers 10 #32 Posted December 19, 2012 She's going up in the world and understandably wants to live in Dore rather than with the plebs in Millhouses.
 Share this content via...

Makes me quite sick to think the modern day young girl idol (Kim Kardashian) was only made famous when she made a sex movie and it was leaked (deliberately). And then some time later got married for about a month. And these are the people our younger generation are looking up to and idolising. Its not only Kim K, theres many, men and women, common as muck, not got a single braincell but are sudden celebrities for having one talent (or not) and suddenly millionaires because of the public. ---------- Post added 19-12-2012 at 10:52 ---------- Im just signed up on here purely to reply to this immense amount of jealousy, maybe your dad should have put his mind to something more that just driving and proceed to then train to be the best in the world at a something that entertains millions of people around the world, then he might not be living off state pension. She is absolutely stunning? Very average I would say but I guess she is going to get prettier over time just like every other very average looking girl that made some money and then started on the cosmetics. Well said. Each column inch of publicity we give real heroes and hard workers like Jess is hopefully one less for braindead "celebrities" or overpaid footballers. RobWilson 10 #35 Posted December 19, 2012 (edited) But what I want to know the most is; Why is her buying a house in Sheffield news? Whether she lives in Sheffield or Portugal, it makes no difference to me, or the city in fact. Just one of the things that passes for journalism these days I guess. I wouldn't disagree with that statement, and find it rather unfortunate that her new address has been advertised. That said, the positive aspect of the story is that she's stayed in Sheffield rather than relocating to elsewhere in the UK or to an even sunnier location. Pressure has been put on her in the past by the athletics authorities to move, yet she's stuck with Sheffield, her coach and other support staff at EIS Sheffield. With yesterday's funding cuts to basketball, volleyball, table tennis and swimming it is even more important for the future of sport in Sheffield that the city has such an amazingly high profile athlete based here. It will be something of a disaster if more top athletes are not based in Sheffield by the time Jess retires.
