2014 Tour de France will start in Yorkshire and come to Sheffield

Recommended Posts

Wouldn't the hotel already employed staff to cook, serve and wash up afterwards, and also buy the ingredients irrespective of the whether le Tour was coming?

It's not like you order a meal, and they then decided to advertise for a cook, and buy the ingredients.

So where did they magic up the free steak from?

That's the thing about businesses. They have the staff based on the workload. So in busy periods they bring in staff. So Meadowhall has rather more staff if they think it is Christmas than they do in August. Folk get paid for overtime you know.

Similarly to sell a pint of beer you actually need to buy a pint of beer to sell. To cook a steak you need to buy a steak use heat to cook it. etc etc.

You may have noticed how the boozers down Bramhall Lane have extra staff on match days. Why do you think that is?

One-off event spending is not 'investment'. Don't forget to do the economics.
so those who spend to recoup on a one-off event isn't investment?

People who buy hats to sell for cup final day or Olympic merchandise to sell, or in this case 'invest' to recoup during the tour aren't investing? What are they doing then? Investment doesn't have to be long term - there's more to investing than long term property investments.

Investment means putting money in to recoup more later. Wall street traders can 'invest' over minutes - the old 'buy' now 'sell' cliche

Maybe the tour should have avoided South Yorkshire and the whingers and when it got to Holme Moss done a sharp turn right and gone to Manchester.

No, because by becoming to South Yorkshire it wound up all the miserable gits on here, making them even more depressed and everyone else much happier. The idea of the Tour passing by Penistone999's front door is priceless.

Actually there was no speculation at all, although there was in the post I responded too. It seems rather than the £7.1 million that the tour cost to bring here, the actual cost was £30 million. The budget of £27 million was actually overspent by around £ 3 million.

So the cost of bringing £102 million of business to Yorkshire was £30 million. The £102 million was not profit. It was revenue. A hotel selling a meal to a family for £50 REVENUE has to buy the ingredients, provide staff to cook it, serve it, wash up afterwards and pay VAT. A revenue of £102 million is likely to have brought around £10 million in taxable profits on a good day for which we spent £30 million in organisation and policing.

Not disputing the costs figures.

But the speculation around visitor numbers. Visitor numbers will more than likely be boosted by Yorkshire being front and centre in the world of sport for 2 days, I'm not sure how you can dispute that without hard figures to back you up.
