2014 Tour de France will start in Yorkshire and come to Sheffield

Recommended Posts

I don't claim to be a cycling fan and I won't be taking much interest in the race from now on, for me it was all about being part of a once in a lifetime event taking place in my own backyard.

I couldn't tell you the name of the guy who won the race without googling it, but that's not important as far as I'm concerned, I'm just pleased I turned up to be part of such a huge event for this region.

My posts are not addressed at you, you have been honest and sincere about your experiences, your posts show a bit more insight than these who claim tour is a proud super experience to get high on and then throwing lies around saying this is a megasuperglobalthingtogetsuperproudof while tour has been around more than 100 years but they only bothered with this when it comes here.

Not everybody lives a world of lies, there a few very conscious bright insightful interesting posts here I thank for their contribution.

It is great people have become interested now and I bet £100 that the sale of bicycles are going to peak much higher than usual this month.

How come that when they did not come to Yorkshire very few cared anything at all about the tour.

Now they have come to Sheffield the majority claims it to be the greatest world event.

Coming to Sheffield is a requirement for these people to acknowledge its importance so they can feel a certain sense of egoistic and proud importance.

If that sense is not there they could not care any less.

I went out and watched it, the advertising and many police an cars that come by with their sirens and noises. Then the cyclist came, it was only little different from when I have seen cyclist pass in the countryside before, fun, but all my sundays are always full. of fun

We watch every other year when it's nowhere near the UK, so why should this year be any different? My mobility isn't good enough for me to stand for hours or walk to a good viewpoint or hub so I watched in exactly the same way as I do normally and how I will be for the rest of the tour. There are plenty of us about :)

The least insightful and most insulting/ ignorant posts have been yours.

You call the people of Sheffield hypocrites/liars repeatedly, but why arent you bleating on about the people on other places such asYork, Leeds and todays crowds in London. Are they all hypocrites? Would you have preferred they hadnt turned out or should they have put you in charge of the event.

As you are constantly belittling and sniping at the people of Sheffield then why on earth do you live here and not elsewhere?

What's please me most is that the people of Yorkshire and within Sheffield have participated in a community event on a very large scale and had a good time. It makes a change and gives cause for optimism about what is possible.

The organisers were delighted.

It was this enthusiasm that left race organiser Christian Prudhomme – and Tour legend Bernard Hinault – in awe of the warmth of their reception as Welcome to Yorkshire anticipates a financial windfall of at least £100m for the county’s tourism industry.

“When you said you would deliver the grandest Grand Départ of the Tour it was the truth. You have raised the bar for all future hosts of the Tour de France,” said Prudhomme.

“I work for the Tour, but I also love the Tour, and I have seen that the people of Yorkshire love the Tour too. I can see the Tour in their hearts, and in their eyes. For that, I say thank you.

“Bernard Hinault said to me that it is the first time in 40 years on a bike that he has seen crowds like we saw this weekend.”

With the rain relenting on both days, Welcome to Yorkshire chief executive Gary Verity believes the extraordinary imagery will prove to be of “priceless” value.

“Our beautiful county has done itself proud once again,” he said.

“Undoubtedly, it will give a huge boost to the Yorkshire economy but it is the images of Yorkshire people, Yorkshire pride and Yorkshire’s outstanding landscapes beamed around the world which have been simply priceless for the county.”

The riders were delighted.

I'll never forget those days! So happy to be part of it...thank you #YorkshireGrandDepart #letouryorkshire #TDF

Marcel Kittel @marcelkittel · 16h

And my yellow dream is over again. But it was unique 2 ride in yellow in front of this crazy crowd! Won't forget that 4 the rest of my life.

It's a good job people didnt need your permission to turn out and see otherwise nobidy would have been deemed good enough by you and then youd have criticised sheffield for not showing up as is your style.

The weekend was Good for Yorkshire, good for the cities, towns and villages of Yorkshire and the people who live in them including Sheffield. It was also good for the TDF and the UK.

Apologies for the long post.

By eck Sheffield - What a grand job everyone did yesterday.

I was in Oughtibridge on Jawbone hill sat on a wall in a field.

Set off at 8 am on the tram to middlewood - not many folk on board but very helpful tram conductor told us about the buses and the best spots to watch.

Headed up the hill through the crowds - was a great atmosphere - **** Inn was getting busy already. Saw a fella hacking his garden bush to pieces trying to get a better view - Had a laugh and said he needed to hurry up as the wife was back soon haha.

Found a spot in a field and watched the numbers come powering up the hill - getting busier and more atmosphere - fancy dress, kids in bike gear and the amateurs (but still pretty good) running up and down the route all being cheered on by the spectators.

Managed to watch most of it on the Ipad and kept everyone informed how far away they were - then the helicopters - like summit out of apocalypse now came tearing towards us! The caravan was great fun - everyone dancing and getting the crowd going - was great fun. Although i didn't get any freebies still enjoyed the atmosphere!

Mexican waves, Kids writing messages on the road, the tension built - and then out of nowhere all these cyclists came tearing up the hill - my god that was impressive to see something like that on a sunny sunday afternoon.

Decided to walk home as the trams and busses were rammed and I figured someone else would need that tram more than me. Made it home about six o clock and watched the replay and I was swelling with pride - Sheffield and the surrounding areas looked stunning - Yeah there was one or two bad apples standing a bit close but they wont be remembered! It truly was an incredible day and something I will remember fondly for many many years to come. Well Done sheffield, the people, and a mention to the organisers. Three of them stood guard as a little lad wrote his message on the road and ushered him away when any cars/bikes were coming - It was brilliant. And I'd love to see it here again! Well done lads and Lasses.

Sums it up beautifully.

Regards

No pre madonnas

Not like the great footballers on 300k a week.

Thank you for that. You've made me wonder what we called over-acting footballers before we had Madonna to compare them with.

My comments are directed at a very specific line of consciousness and it is impossible for this to apply to everybody.

Just find it funny and comical how huge crowds convert in an event like this.

Many times in history huge crowds have been converted simply by some ecstatic rush it gives to them.

Huge crowds can suddenly attain high adrenaline and follow some new rush to get high on.

Suddenly out of nowhere on the media on telly internet and papers statements like England is the worlds best cycling nation. We are the greatest cyclists in the world now. This is the greatest thing because it is in England now.

Have you ever been to china or hong kong and watched people cycle there?

Why is England the greatest and the top of the universe? The whole world is great, England is only one little part of it.

This tour is another perfect example of how that happens to humans.

Not everybody falls in that category and I am not addressing anyone in person, my comment addresses a certain line of (un)consciousnes.

A general comment is not a personal one towards an individual to defend when is clear the comment don't apply to you personally but address human group reactions.

For anyone wanting to continue to follow the tour the highlights programme at 7pm each night on ITV 4 /free online is an excellent way to do so really interesting programme sums each day up nicely particularly if you don't want to/cant sit through hours of live action.

It might have been only one day, but for that one day this city felt like it used too.

Celebrations and pride in our home city, with all the problems we deal with every day, the blight of crime and disorder of our youth, for one day we could stand in the streets in front of our nation and indeed a rather large world audience and show sheffield as a supportive and proud city.

The racers, commentators, organizers are all taken back by just how much support this race had, combine that with a real upward curve in profits and it was a cracker of a day.

Have a look at some of the footage of the riders themselves, they were loving the challenge and the support (bar camera's in their face).

A big thank you to mountain rescue for giving out water on the summit of Holm Moss. With an estimated 70 thousand people on the hill, the queues for the one ice cream van were apocalyptic.
