It appears that roads used will be closed to cycle traffic for 3 hours before the tour arrives. So if you are cycling to a pitch in the back of beyond you will need to get there well in advance and will be stuck there for the duration. Take a brolly and some bog roll.

A comment you made in one of your posts earlier that was deleted by the moderator.

It was unnecessary.

I live in Shirecliffe and the only way I can get off the estate is either via Herries Road or Shirecliffe Road otherwise I can't get anywhere. Is there a way of me being able to get through at 12pm to get to work or is that completely out of the question?

First of the riders come through Bradfield about 3:30pm and finish at the Arena about 4:15pm with the slower riders up to half an hour after that.

Before the riders come through there is the 'publicity caravan', a parade of vehicles throwing gifts out into the crowds.

So what will you be doing at 14:00hrs on 6th July? Be ready to enjoy the final part of a weekend of Sheffield's biggest party by picking your spot on the route early. A couple of hours before the cyclists arrive, you can enjoy the spectacle of the promotional caravan - an 8km trail of decorated vehicles, promotional cars and sponsor vehicles all distributing free souvenirs and goodies to the crowds.

Some key times to be aware of are:

Location > Caravan > Peloton (earliest time)

Cote de Midhopestones > 13:50hrs > 15:24hrs ; Bradfield > 14:01hrs > 15:34hrs ; Cote de Bradfield >14:03hrs > 15:36hrs; Worrall > 14:07hrs > 15:39hrs; Oughtibridge > 14:10hrs > 15:42hrs; Cote d'Oughtibridge14:14hrs > 15:46hrs; 14:16hrs >15:47hrs; Cote de Wincobank(Jenkin Road) >14:37hrs >16:06hrs; SHEFFIELD finish* > 14:46hrs > 16:14hrs.

(*the Caravan will deviate off the route at Clifton Street, off Attercliffe Common, and not through the finish line).

The race enters Sheffield from the A616 by turning right into Midhopestones. The route covers the following roads:

Mortimer Road > Penistone Road > Brown House Lane > Kirk Edge Road > Haggstones Road > Burton Lane > Church Street > Bridge Hill > Station Lane > Oughtibridge Lane > Skew Hill Lane > Salt Box Lane > Halifax Road > Penistone Road North > Leppings Lane > Hewrries Road > Shirecliffe Road > Rutland Road > Minna Road > Burngreave Road > Gower Street > Sutherland Street > Savile Street East > Brightside Lane > Upwell Street > Holywell Road > Jenkin Road > Newman Road > Barrow Road > Meadowhall Road > Meadowhall Way > Vulcan Road > Sheffield Road > Attercliffe Common.

Use this schedule to find the times across the whole of Stage 2 York to Sheffield and the maps below to plan where you'll join the expected 250,000 spectators to watch this spectacle

Consider whether a spectator hub might be better for you as there will be more going on and they will have big screens so you can follow the race.

The Hubs are on the link.

http://www.welcometosheffield.co.uk/grand-depart-sheffield/spectator-hubs

If you arent at a hub you will have more space, but the race itself will pass quickly, although the caravan throwing free stuff might take 1.5h-2h. Take a brolly.

So why do they need to shut the roads for most of the day? At a railway level crossing they seem to manage with closing the road for a couple of minutes when an Intercity express is passing through.
