Wendy I make home made soup every week which lasts for a couple of days. I throw anything in, carrots, onions, parsnips, butternut squash, leeks and celery. After cooking, I also add a tin of either tomato or chicken soup to the homemade soup. Salt, pepper, dried mixed herbs, garlic and a vegetable stock cube and its delicious.

What I want to hear from you Wendy is what you think to your soup maker, as Im thinking of buying one myself. I make my soup in my pressure cooker, but understand that a soupmaker, also chops and then cooks the vegetables. Is this correct ? Maybe someone else on SF has a soupmaker and can advise us both ?

I got a Murphy Richards Soup maker for Xmas and its the best thing I've ever been given. It cooks, chops and blends in one process, taking out the inconvenience of the different stages of the process. You literally just put all the ingredients in the pot together at once and turn it on. Its also on a timer so stops when ready. And there's only one pot to clean at the end. Simple.

Are we talking about one of these things?

These things are coming out as a result of this

Its been championed by most top chefs now as an indispensible bit of equipment and the next big thing for home chefs. The thermomix not only cooks it chills as well so you can make sorbets and ice creams as well, it replaces about 6 bits of equipment which youwould hope it would for that price tag! That and sous vide will be the big thing

My word.......that thermomix gadget reminds me of the old Kirby vacuum cleaners.......book a demo etc. lol. That alone says it costs a fortune. I didn't see an actual price but I don't think I'll be booking a demo anytime soon. :hihi:

The soup makers do seem to have earned a place in many kitchens though and I can see why they might replace the pan and blitzer. If they encourage people to make their own home made soup then they have to be good.

I made my pea and ham soup today and first of all I sweated onions, celery and diced gammon steak. I then cooked it for about 20 minutes in my pressure cooker before adding my re-constituted dried marrow fat peas and potato. Another 10 minutes in the pressure cooker and then blitzed with my whirly thing. Finally adding water to make it the right consistency for us. I do wonder if the gammon steaks would have cooked properly in a soup maker though.

I would definitely use a soup maker for veggie soup or for chicken soup etc where the meat had been cooked first. I can see a real purpose for the soup maker especially if you are out working all day and then come home and just have to chuck everything in and leave it to itself.

Its about £550 but I think you get a lifetime guarantee (and so you should at that price)

Thats my query with them as well. Can you taste as you go with them? can you check the seasoning and consistancy while it does its thing? They just seem a little self contained for my liking
