tana86
My son had a eye test at school, and he didn't pass. The woman who did the eye test rang me up on the day to tell me and explain that he will be referred to the hospital for a further test to see if he needs glasses or not. I was just wondering if anybody else had a similar problems and what the test will involve? also how long do you have to wait for an appointment? any advise will be greatly appreciated
biffalo
My son had his eye test at school last year and we were referred to the hospital (chesterfield) due to "reduced level of vision in the left eye". we had never noticed anything so I thought it was probably just that he was messing around during the test as they took them in for the test in pairs. We waited about 4 months for our appointment but like I said we were at chesterfield hospital. On the day of the appointment my son had a quick check with the orthoptist and then given some drops to dilate his pupils and we had to wait half an hour for them to work, we then saw the ophthalmologist who tested his sight and got his prescription. My little one now has to wear glasses so we were given a voucher to take along to any optician. My son loved all the attention he was receiving although I will warn you the drops do sting a bit so we had a bit of moaning then. Prepare yourself for being at the hospital a couple of hours but be warned they struggle to focus on games/books once the drops are applied. HTH. tana86
Thank you for the information. That's the same with my son, they said it was his left eye he was having problems with he cant focus on things far away but when there right in front of him he can. I've never noticed anything with him either, he can be a bit clumsy at times and fall over and stuff but I put that down to him been a boy always running around and stuff, but thinking about now it maybe because he cant focus through one eye. I just want to get it sorted and know what's what.
kittenta
It can take a few months for an appointment to come through. My daughters first appointment took around 2 1/2 hours in total and yes they do give them drops. Just watch him for a while after as they tend to have blurred vision and walk into things more than usual!

kittenta
What do they do when they have eye drops? what do they look for and how? They put the eye drops in which dilate the pupils. They will then (after about half an hour) have a look into their eyes, ask them to look at a picture on top of a stick, that sort of thing. The kids tend to enjoy it mostly, they just have to look at pictures and teddy bears .

susiesue82
My daughter failed her eye test and went through the same process as above, she's been wearing glasses for several months and also has to wear a patch for an hour a day. Just though you'd be interested to learn that as the eye is still developing they can actually improve their vision to the point where they don't need glasses anymore. Although my daughter actually loves hers as they're purple and she looks like mummy
S8 Blade
The drops stop the eye from being able to focus properly. With little ones their eyes work really hard to help them see clearly so any problems may not be noticed. The drops temporarily stop that happening (the dilation of the pupils is a side effect). They do sting when they're first inserted. If you've got any questions ask the school to give you contact information of the orthoptist who attended school. If its Sheffield they will be based at the Children's Hospital.

Not necessarily, my daughter was under the children's eye department at the Hallamshire, I had to contact them if I needed to know anything.
