Navy blue suit with light grey/pale blue shirt and brown tie is quite popular at the moment. Avoid wide pin stripes, not really in. Cant go wrong with a classic charcoal grey suit and white shirt. Can wear most kinds of tie without a colour clash. I always think double cuff shirts with classy not tacky cuff links look smart.

Thanks guys for the advice- I always am myself, but am clueless about which suits are 'laughed at' these days generally, especially as in my new job I'd be hoping to make a 'good impression'?

It would be cheaper to get a decent bespoke suit rather than trying to keep up with fashion - A bespoke one might look like it fits too

Made to measure, pick your own material, that's the way to do it. Plus if looked after they last. Off the peg suits buttons come off straight away and the suit falls apart in no time because the manufactures use nylon stitching.
