andygardener
250 IAF airstrikes in gaza in 24 hrs, IDF troops massed on the border with Gaza and 30,000 reservists called up by the IDF. Looks very much like the prelude to another invasion of Gaza to me. Hamas certainly don't help by keeping firing rockets into Israel but given the civilian death toll last time this just seems like a big potential own goal by Israel. tinfoilhat
I don't think Israel gives a tupenny doodah what the rest of the world thinks. Hamas aren't helping themselves as you point out but it will turn into a mess. Whilst Hamas crappy rockets can and have killed people, Israel have a far bigger stick. Obama has domestic issues I think, and most of the middle easy is either looking at their own house or looking at Syria. Although I wish they'd use restraint, I can see why they have chosen now to target Hamas.
geared
because they have been shooting rockets into Israel for the last two weeks?? It didn't all just start the other day when Israel took out the Hamas military chief.

Understand what you're saying, but how can Israel simply do nothing? Thankfully we live peacefully with our neighbours, but imagine if we didn't. Would we expect our government to do nothing while Ireland, France or Belgium fired rockets into the UK?
Smithster
The Israel/Gaza situation to me is akin to a big playground bully constantly picking on the wimpiest kid in school, and getting away with it because he has the support of all the teachers. Of course Hamas don't help themselves by firing rockets over the border, but given the brutal oppression they face from Israel, it's hardly any wonder they feel the need to find a way to fight back. It's just sad that the people who will ultimately suffer for it are the innocent Palestinians in Gaza when the Israeli government dishes out its heavy handed response, like last time when they illegally used white phosphorous shells against civilians. S10mainly
Its just possible that Hamas are a bit on the loony fringe? The PLO accept that Isreal is there to stay, and get threatened by Hamas... The Hamas / PLO difference is (to me) a good way of judging the loony level of supporters of Palestinian rights.. Im on the late Yasser Arafat / PLO side if that is obvious to the hard of thinking.....before Im called a Zionist dog or similar
Smithster
Its more akin to the stupid kid that antagonises the hardest kid on the block and then wines when they get a bloody nose. That implies that all the thousands of civilians who were killed in Operation Cast Lead were just asking for it. I'm sorry but I don't see it that way at all. It's important to make the distinction between Hamas and the general population of Gaza, just as it is between the Israeli government and the wider population. Thankfully we live peacefully with our neighbours, but imagine if we didn't. Would we expect our government to do nothing while Ireland, France or Belgium fired rockets into the UK? I'm not suggesting they do nothing. Counter battery fire is not unreasonable. But actually the easiest thing for them to do is expand Iron Dome. It's not cheap but it's cheap in both cost and lives compared to another ground war. It's already got a 90%+ kill rate against the rockets it engages, invest in more batteries, keep improving the technology and hamas can throw as many rockets over as they want, they'll get shot down and Israel could get some moral high ground by not having to respond by blowing up half of Gaza.
