iansheff
I read about this soldier yesterday who was jailed for 18 months for having a gun that was still in a locked box that was presented to him. He was told if he didn't plead guilty and was found guilty he would get 5 years. Compare it to cases where there are people who have been caught with knives and which we were told would lead to zero tolerance and they are still walking the streets. The link to the article is below, if like me you feel he has been hard done by there is a petition you can sign. http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/campaigns/our_boys/4642941/Open-letter-to-David-Cameron-over-jailing-of-SAS-sergeant.html Petition Link http://www.thepetitionsite.com/466/483/779/freedom-for-this-sas-hero-sgt-danny-nightingale-now/
Happ Hazzard
The law is an ass. The government should not have the right to tell people they are not allowed to own guns.
Cyclone
The guy should never have been prosecuted, i read the story yesterday, sometimes the CPS really should use it's discretion about whether a prosecution serves the public good.

High Green
The guy should never have been prosecuted, i read the story yesterday, sometimes the CPS really should use it's discretion about whether a prosecution serves the public good. Serious question, is the CPS involved as the article suggests a military court?
Cyclone
Maybe not, presumably there is a military equivalent though who could have chosen to not prosecute...

It was a court martial, I'm not sure the CPS gets involved with those. Whatever, the sentence does seem a little harsh.
Location114
What a disgusting story. The poor guy has basically been bullied into taking the rap for something that is clearly out of his control. Where is humanity these days?
RosyRat
Serious question, is the CPS involved as the article suggests a military court? Quite right, High Green. Best that people read the story before they offer comments on here. Nothing to do with British Law, the CPS, police or anything else people like to bang on about. This was an internal army matter. Here's a link to the Telegraph article & an informative headline : http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/9669051/SAS-war-hero-betrayed-by-the-Army-says-wife.html

It was returned with his possessions from abroad in a case and never opened due to him having had a stroke and suffered severe memory loss. Obviously whilst abroad and on a military base he was entitled to hold firearms.
