Cyclone Posted November 12, 2012 Posted November 12, 2012 Hardly anyone sticks to the limit on there. 40 mph is the limit but it needs to be increased but no council ever wants to be connected with raising a speed limit!! Penistone Rd for example is safe enough for a 40 mph limit in places but again it's been 30 since it was built. A recent speed limit review identified that road as needing the limit raised to 50 IIRC, it didn't say anything about central barriers being needed, why would they be needed, most 2 lane roads are 60 limits.
medusa Posted November 12, 2012 Posted November 12, 2012 I drive along there a number of times a week at the moment since my OH is working near Norton, and when I stick to the speed limit it does leave you feeling like you're holding everybody up, doesn't it? It needs to either have a higher limit or be properly enforced and policed. Crossing it as a pedestrian is so dangerous when there's just nothing arresting the progress of the side going towards Meadowhead all the way from White Lane to the roundabout at Lightwood, so the cars are definitely not doing 40mph at that point. The opposite direction is a little easier but there are no pedestrian crossings, so I dread how hard it would be if the speed limit was increased.

But how many of them have unprotected lights in the middle of the road?

I empathise with your concerns as a pedestrian but, it seems, a footpath crossing a road doesn't necessarily determine the speed limit of the road - witness the footpath that crosses the Parkway within its NSL stretch.

My understanding is that it is correct, more barriers would be needed and possibly other infrastructure upgrades too. There are differing requirements for different types of road and different speed limits, in terms of protecting street furniture / infrastructure with barriers, street lighting, detection equipment for crossings and traffic signals, signing etc. It is very rarely as simple as changing some signs and changing the legal order.

Having crossed it a number of times as a pedestrian I can assure everyone that you only do so VERY, VERY carefully! It's not the speeding motorists as such who cause the most danger. It's anticipating which cars are, or are not speeding - and which ones will suddenly ram their foot down just when you think you've got it right and you'll have time to cross! Some almost seem to do that deliberately to try and scare walkers encroaching onto their teriotory!

It may not necessarily determine the speed limit, but if the speed limit is increased then the council is duty bound to do something that can assure the safety of pedestrians who need to cross the road as part of the package of what to do on a stretch of road. Whether that's a pedestrian crossing, a bridge or another solution is entirely up to the people who work this sort of thing out, but to increase the speed limit on a road where crossing is already a case of taking your life in your hands without considering the needs of pedestrians, cyclists etc would be failing one group to please another.

The council always manage to find the budget to bring a speed limit down though.
truman Posted November 13, 2012 Posted November 13, 2012 Not quite as simple as that, for it to be made a 50mph limit, there would have to be central crash barriers installed. Is that your opinion or ia it fact? If it's fact then provide a link please..genuinely interested ..not having a go... this is NSL without a crash barrier.. http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=Worksop&hl=en&ll=53.322158,-1.154037&spn=0.023686,0.038581&sll=52.8382,-2.327815&sspn=12.280023,19.753418&oq=worksop&hnear=Worksop,+Nottinghamshire,+United+Kingdom&t=h&z=15&layer=c&cbll=53.322234,-1.154107&panoid=0bG1-O-V5eVYX01DXGyFCw&cbp=12,0,,0,-0.1 why would you need one for 50?

I thought NSL was 60 unless a crash barrier and central reservation existed, in which case NSL is 70? Posted from Sheffieldforum.co.uk App for Android
