11.11.12 - KnowHow CC 1-3 Sheffield Forum (League Cup R1)

Recommended Posts

Sheffield Forum progressed to the second round of the League Cup by defeating KnowHow CC at Carterhall Road. Shaun Baugh and Eifion Griffiths were unavailable for this tie and midfielder Tom Gray was rested on the bench as a few changes were made including the formation. Zak Crownshaw, Andy Coates and Joe Neate came in to the starting line up.

Forum kicked up the hill in the first half with the wind against them on the sloping pitch and defended very well in the conditions. They looked dangerous when on the attack and opened the scoring again early in the game.

With just over ten minutes on the clock, Forum fought forward and Shane Middlebrook played through Daniel Sheedy who shrugged off his marker to face the keeper one on one and put the ball away for a deserved lead.

Given the conditions, it looked as though the players were hardly moving when running up the hill towards goal but just five minutes later Forum doubled their advantage. Shane Middlebrook was forced wide towards the edge of the area but managed to turn his marker and hit a high, looping shot over the KnowHow keeper into the far corner to keep up his scoring record.

Forum were comfortable and should have added a third when Andy Coates was in plenty of space and found himself heading onto to goal but his shot was easily saved. Daniel Sheedy and Liam Wales also had efforts saved.

KnowHow did have their moments and clipped the top of the cross bar with one attempt whilst another shot flashed just the wrong side of the angle for them but it was a good first half display from Sheffield Forum who took the 2 goal lead into half time.

As the second half began, the conditions calmed down a little and the wind wasn't as strong as the first half but KnowHow looked to get into the game and pushed forward. Forum were still good for their lead but couldn't build on it.

KnowHow were then offered a great opportunity to get back in the game as Robbie Loving handled in the area and the referee pointed to the spot. Luckily for Forum, the penalty was hit low to the left...but too far to left as it cleared the post and went out for a goal kick.

Forum then thought they had finished off the game as Ashley Proctor, on for the injured Jason Bowden, ran down the left, beat his man on the counter attack and played the ball back across goal for Corey Crownshaw to put the ball over the line. Unfortunately, the referee then brought play back for offside despite Forums protests that the ball was actually played back at the cross but the goal didn't stand.

KnowHow then pulled one as they stepped up their attack and Forum failed to clear as the game was set for a tense end.

Sheedy had other ideas though as he came exploited the space left by KnowHow, had one shot saved, another grabbed in the air by the keeper before he did eventually finish. Sub Phil Gill burst forward following a clearance by the Forum defence and played Daniel Sheedy through. He beat the last man with ease and rounded the keeper before slotting home giving Forum the goal they needed.

Forum could have added a couple more but final pass or shot just wasn't quite there and the game ended with a 3-1 scoreline to see Sheffield Forum into the second round of the League Cup.
