Here's a 1960s map showing the location. The name of the firm was evidently the Sheffield Brick Co. Ltd. whose Head Office was at the Rutland Road brickworks, and which also owned the brickworks at Wadsley Bridge. Here are scans of advertisements in a 1950s Kelly's Directory. The Wincobank brickworks evidently supplied the bricks for building the nearby Flower Estate - here's a link to a photo on the picturesheffield.com site whose tite mentions this. The Shiregreen Lane brickworks is still mentioned in the 1968 directory, but by 1970 only the Rutland Road brickworks is mentioned, the other two evidently having closed.

To start a new thread and qoute 'hillsbro' on this one, I don't know if it's possible but a couple of observations brings something to mind and entirely off topic, sorry. On the map scan on hillsbro's post is Leedham Rd, I have an aunt who lives there and on a visit there many years ago my daughter and I walked into Shiregreen WMC which is just around the corner, we were thrilled to learn of the 'Full Monty' scenes that were shot there, in fact we went on the stage and saw evidence of tape, glitter and sparkly paper still stuck to the back wall all left over from the movie. One thing was sad though the place looked dark and deserted with very few patrons, you know I did'nt see one piece of advertising that mentioned the 'Full Monty' at all.

yes there was, sheffield brick company as it was called,i know because my dad used to be the foreman there and used to take me on a saturday mornings to help him and earning some pocket money in the process.there were 2 entrances one on wincobank ave at the side of the roman ridge pub and the other on shiregreen lane next to the coal man jack watkin.there was also one on rutland rd,wadsley bridge and i believe there was one at woodseats,a number of my dads brothers also worked at these sites

The Brickyards already mentioned were not in Wincobank !. The one in Wincobank was on Vauxhall Road,( Victoria Road, as it was in 1905). I have a 1905 Ordnance Survey map which shows the Brickworks and small quarry. I was born and bred on Newman Road (NO 77 ) and as a young kid, this was a great play area for us. Happy days.

you maybe right gethro, but i can assure you the sheffield brick company operated from wincobank avenue/shiregreen lane site, not sure from what date but ceased trading there approx 1968,as i said before my father was works foreman there until it closed,i still have is redundancy letter.he moved to shiregreen from the rutland rd site has his parents lived on foxglove rd near the bus stop island & we lived there for years. i also remember the big chimney being domolished on a sunday, quite sad at the time as it was like the tinsley cooling towers dominating the skyline at that time

You're dead right Local Blade, the Brickyard Quarry on Shiregreen Lane, was another great play area of ours. I think after the quarry was exhausted of clay, the raw materials were shipped in to keep the kilns working for some time, till the Brickworks finally closed.

The quarry had water in it . 2 to 3 feet deep in places. A great place for sailing home made rafts on, until we got chased by the local Bobby!. Again, Happy Days !.
