Why is everybody calling buns / fairycakes cup cakes ??

Fairy cake recipe from BBC showing fairy cake with icing ??

Yes fairy cakes can be topped or filled with anything you like ,be it cream , icing etc. but they are not flat on the top ! They are baked until risen above the paper case. A proper cup cake is flat with a plain layer of icing level with the top of the paper case.

I call them cupcakes now because it sounds better than calling them fairy cakes.
