died in ww1 aged 17 on hms melpomene a ship that was built for the greeks then took for his majestys government one young man serving his country. Next year it will be wall to wall on the BBC but its doubtfull poor harry will get a mention.

You don't have to go back to ww1 lost a few from our troop in Korea boy soldiers who could join the mans army at 17 I know of at least 3 all Royal sigs that never made 18:mad::mad:

A terrible waste of a young life, and Harry Willis was by no means the youngest boy sailor to die in the First World War - see here for example.

i would think he did the first phase of his training at H M S Ganges a stone frigate at Shotley near Ipswich Suffolk

thanks for replies he is one of many that need to be remembered his grave is in burngreave one of few sailors that made it back home
