Anyone make long journeys to school 1950's/60's

I went to Hind House between 68 and 71 and travelled from pitsmoor to wincobank.

Woodseats to Firth Park and for a while Coal Aston to Firth Park Grammar School.

It appears that travelling great distances to school in the 'old days' was just something we got on with because we were told that's where we had to go and I don't recall ever being worried or disgruntled about the journey to and from school. Nowadays if children do travel, and plenty do if my local secondary schools are anything to go by, it's the parents who've chosen the school, not the other way round. I'm lucky we live in an area with 'good schools' so it's never been a problem we had to worry about, but is travelling across the city at such a young age any more dangerous now than when I did it I wonder?

Can you imagine the outcry these days if children had to travel across Sheffield without a 4 wheeled drive Chelsea Tractor to take them.

I lived in Bradway just off the Derbyshire border and went to Oakwood Primary School in Pitsmoore. Aged 8-10. I admit my Dad used to give me a lift in the morning as he had a shop in Firth Park. The home journey was a tram to The Moore (1d) Then the bus from outside Redgates to Twentywell Lane. (2d) A tram journey and a look in Redgates what more could I want....?

Hillsborough to City School at Stradbroke.... toasted teacake halfway through the journey in Pond Street cafe if

early enough

From 1966 to 1969 aged 8 to 11. The 28 from The Far Lees to Pond Street and then the 56 from Pond Street to St Oswald's on Southend Road on the Wybourn.

 

Then 1971 to 1974 the 28 to Pond Street then either the 20 to Scott Road or the 76/76 to Barnsley Road from High street

I went to Eckington Grammar (renamed Westfield Comprehensive in 1957). I lived at Frecheville and we had to get a bus each day. We usually had Sharps coaches and there were 2 regular drivers, Reg and an older guy whose name escapes me. Whatever the weather, they always turned up and got us to school despite snowdrifts of several feet high on the road to Mosborough. I was there from 1956 to 1961.
