Shelleypop   10 #1 Posted October 7, 2012 Does anyone know where I can buy a praying mantis and tank/food etc in Sheffield? Preferrably around the S6 area!
 Share this content via...

Joanl   12 #5 Posted October 7, 2012 I had a praying mantiss land on me once. He had got in somehow and he flew into the fan which somehow had flicked him back down into the room, landing on my housecoat hem. I panicked when I lost sight of him and turned sharply to see if I could spot him. That's when I saw him...hanging there on the bottom of my housecoat.I screamed and hopped about until he fell off then used a broom to whoosh him back out into the garden......This was about 40 odd years ago, in Sigapore and I can still see his evil little face now and he was a big one too......I know he was harmless but at 9 months pregnant as I was, it gave me a bit of a start......... DaFoot   10 #6 Posted October 7, 2012 I got my mantis from the Lizard Lounge on Holme Lane, so maybe worth talking to them to see if they can get some more.  She recently died but that does mean I have tank/food to sell (PM me). katkin   10 #7 Posted October 7, 2012 I think youve just missed the show at Doncaster Dome but I got my last one from Lizard Lounge and she lived for 14-15 months. Before she died she laid several oothecas even though she had never been near a male and a couple hatched. For a while, we had about a dozen tiny mantids scurrying round the tank but depite best efforts, eventually only ended up with one and shes's about 4 months old now and still teeny. You could try ebay, Ive had a few exotic stick insects from there. Its hit n miss depending on how well the seller packs the bug but often cheaper (I paid £14 - yes, £14 for Millie2 from Lizard Lounge!) kitty katt   10 #10 Posted October 7, 2012 I cannot imagine why anyone would want one, that said you can get them from the snake shop in Attercliffe, Attercliffe road  Because they're beautiful creatures..  I had one that lasted around a year, she was a big green one and grew to about 100mm long, she was so interesting to watch  I bought mine from a girl that was breeding them and fetched it from Barlborough..  That was a good few years ago though.. Joanl   12 #11 Posted October 7, 2012 I cannot imagine why anyone would want one, that said you can get them from the snake shop in Attercliffe, Attercliffe road  I honestly and genuinely didn't know that they were kept as pets until I read this. Just shows you're never to old to learn something new. Mind you, I remember now that some people even keep crickets and cockroaches in some places.
