jemson   10 #14 Posted September 9, 2012 The Valley of Ale. Also think that town centre is looking better and better. Compare it with what greets you when you get off the train in Manc and you realise just how well looked after Sheffield is. When the Moor is done, it will be better still. Thorpist   72 #15 Posted September 9, 2012 Being realistic, Sheffield has one good theatre and is located near to the Peak District.
 Share this content via...
fox20thc   10 #16 Posted September 9, 2012 Excellent public spaces, parks, galleries, sports venues, theatres. Tramlines festival, fright night, comedy festival, we're a base for visiting neighbouring attractions in the peak park.  I popped into the city centre on Saturday and it felt alive, with the food festival and the excellent buskers entertaining the crowds reminded me a bit of coventry garden in the late 80's
 Share this content via...
Vague_Boy   10 #17 Posted September 9, 2012 Excellent public spaces Yes, whenever I chose somewhere to visit, public spaces are certainly high on my list of things to see.  parks Most places have parks.  galleries Better than the Tate Liverpool or The Lowry in Manchester?  sports venues If there's an event on maybe. And if you're interested in sport.  If I went to Manchester for example, why would I visit the Etihad Stadium? Or the Manchester Aquatics Centre? I know what a swimming pool looks like.  theatres Again, most large cities have theaters comparable to ours.  Tramlines festival, fright night, comedy festival Most places have comedy clubs and festivals.  Laughter Lines (Leeds)  Manchester Comedy Festival  Liverpool Comedy Festival Birmingham Comedy Festival  Ditto Halloween type events  Leeds  Manchester  Birmingham  we're a base for visiting neighbouring attractions in the peak park. That's a bit sad isn't it? "Visit Sheffield, it's a great place to come to in order to leave it for somewhere else that's more interesting".  See comments above. metalman   21 #19 Posted September 9, 2012 with the olympics and the likes of Enis suddenly putting Sheffield on the map can this be capitalised on and make Sheffield a top destination for tourism,  No.  or is the challenge too great ???  Yes. AndrewC   301 #20 Posted September 10, 2012 See comments above.  Your logic seems based around 'everything in Sheffield can be found elsewhere' which rules all but a handful of cities on the planet out of ever being worth considered as tourist destinations.  I went to Prague for my hols this year. Nothing in Prague that you couldn't get in a hell of a lot of other European cities - but it was still a damn nice place to go.  It seems to me that a lot of people just live with their closed minds in this city/county; they don't want Sheffield to be a nice place because then they might have to expend energy admitting it  Saying Sheffield is crap and always will be? Easy, no effort required. Ultimate reward: same old crap.  Saying Sheffield has some good attributes but needs to improve in areas a, b and c? Difficult, time consuming and risky but; ultimate reward: an improved city for everyone.
 Share this content via...
Allen   38 #21 Posted September 10, 2012 It's never going to be a tourist destination...so there's no point in the attempt to make it one.  It's just the same as many other cities in England.
 Share this content via...

And have we got them, or something equally interesting, in Sheffield? Answer that question honestly and you'll see why Prague is full of tourists and Sheffield isn't. AndrewC Â Â 301 #23 Posted September 10, 2012 So what attributes made it a particularly nice place to go? And have we got them, or something equally interesting, in Sheffield? Answer that question honestly and you'll see why Prague is full of tourists and Sheffield isn't. Â Well in response to the particular question the OP set then yes, you can see the differences between a top international tourist destination and Sheffield and yes, the task to bring Sheffield anywhere near that is nigh on impossible, but I was attacking the mindset here which seems ingrained in many SF forumers which is that Sheffield is crap, let's just except and wallow in our own misery. Â Whilst the answers on here were in response to the particularly question set, they are still symptomatic of that cynicism. Just look at this other similar thread recently doing the rounds. A lot of people who probably enjoy their city greatly can't even come up with just one or two plus points when actually asked to list them - the first couple of responses seem positive, then watch the cynics step in; Â http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=1047140
 Share this content via...
Guest   #24 Posted September 10, 2012 Funnily enough I never point anyone at this forum with regards to seeing what Sheffield is like.  You just have to look at this thread for the amount of negativity.
 Share this content via...
