If you've got Win 7 Professional or above you could try running it in Windows XP mode.

This is only an emulation though, the XP install can only see physical devices which are also present in the W7 environment.

It has a Midi interface, can't you just use a MIDI to USB adapter? (<£10)

edit: for example http://www.amazon.co.uk/Adapter-USB-to-Midi-In-Out/dp/B000XRI3CC

edit edit: that one get some pretty bad reviews. but there seem to be loads more on amazon with better reviews (and elsewhere, just checked maplin and they sell the same sort of thing).

How would you transfer XP or Windows 7 to a machine that doesn't have it ? - bearing in mind you don't have any discs ?

Discs aren't the problem. It's the product key you really need (there are ways around the key problem but I think this post would probably get pulled if I discussed them).

You can download the disk iso for windows 7 from http://www.mydigitallife.info/windows-7-iso-x86-and-x64-official-direct-download-links-ultimate-professional-and-home-premium/ then either burn the ISO onto a DVD using Imgburn or onto a pendrive using the Windows 7 USB tool (both are free - I'd go for the USB tool, but if you don't have a spare pen drive hanging around burn a DVD).

You'll find Windows XP iso's on any file sharing site/application.

Back to the key problem: if you bought a computer and it has a sticker on the side with a Windows key on it, it's an OEM version of Windows (rather than the full version you'd buy in a shop). They are officially non-transferable (from computer to computer - unlike the full version which you can transfer from one PC to another). When you try validating the key on a different PC it will fail (because the hardware doesn't match).

When it fails you have an option to validate over the phone. A phone number is provided, which you can ring, and have the key validated over the phone. Many people who transfer OEM keys from one machine to another ring this number and say they've taken their computer to a repair shop and had the motherboard replaced and the Microsoft dude on the phone will validate the key. But I'm sure you're far too honest to do such a thing. :suspect:
