Birth with twins..

Recommended Posts

Hello, just after some others members experiences as been told conflicting information and getting very confused :/

I've got a lg who was 1 yesterday and am expecting non-identical twins 1st December. When i had my lg, i tore really bad and had stitches inside and outside and have been told that i have to have a c-section by my midwife. Now, whenever i go to scans, i get told sometimes that i have to have one and then other times i dont and im gettin very confused and its makin me not look forward to it :( dont get me wrong, i will do whatever, as long as they get here safe, but also get told that they will bring them at 36 weeks, even if they are still growing fine and happy. I would sooner leave them in as long as they are comfortable, to me any extra day in there is doing them the world of good!! Im sooo confused but also angry that all the 'professionals' have a different outcome :( thanks for any advice!!!

Hi there

I'm not a midwife, but I do know what reasons are often given for these sorts of decisions. If they think that you do need a section (which is something that most women who have multiple births are told at one point or another to reduce the complication risk) then they won't wait until you're actually at full term because that increases the risk that you'll go into labour before the date that you're booked in for your section.

If that happens then all the best laid plans go out of the window and they have to fit you in for an emergency section rather than an elective one, and they can't be sure to have potential neonatal care beds available and the like, along with a whole selection of other things which are better planned rather than done on the hoof.

You're officially full term at 37 weeks, but if you've had a baby before then you are less likely to go over term than you would have been if these were your first babies, and you're also less likely to go over term because multiple births tend to be born after earlier labours than single babies. This means that if they're trying to plan a day to do the section, they need to be before the time you're likely to go into labour anyway.

As far as whether you actually do need a section or not, only your doctor can answer that one I'm afraid, as nobody else knows your risk factors and to advise you without an in depth knowledge would be reckless.

I hope you can get your questions answered and then move on to enjoying your pregnancy and looking forward to holding your babies in your arms :)

Hi Cle-cky,

Im expecting twins on 3rd Dec, I am also a little annoyed with the consultant and midwives ive spoken to about labour and possibility of having a c-section. They just seem to brush me off everytime I ask about it, saying its too early to be talking about it!

Im going to be a new mummy to twins, ive got no idea what to expect, so very anxious about the whole thing tbh!

Also been told i might not be able to have an epidural due to previous back surgery and where the scarring is, so I find it so frustrating with there lack of communication with me when I ask.

Going back in 5 weeks for 28 week scan and to see consultant, so not leaving this time without some reassurances!!

thank you :) i dont mind either way as long as the twins are delivered safe and with as little stress on them im just getting fed up of being told different things. I just get round to thinking of one way and get told 'no its other'!!! Which is frustrating!! Not only that but as my little girl is only 1, I want as little disruption for her too. It just appears to me that non of the medical staff seem to know what the others said, and contradict each other. Im pretty sure many other mums, not just twin pregnancies, get conflicting info too :( I worked in a nursery before having my girl and if 2 members of staff told different things, we'd have a right telling off, its so unprofessional!!!

OOhhh congratulations, its scary isnt it but also exciting :) ive got my next scan in just under 3 weeks and i wont be leaving until i find out any information, im actually writing a list so they'll have it all to come!! I really dont mind either way but i do know that if you do have a natural birth, then when the first one is born, there is a very high chance of the second turning and getting settled in a strange position :/ the little wriggle bum!!! I'm just about to start gettin hospital bag ready, i packed a holdall for wen i had Abigayle so this time ill need a suitcase!!! Do you know what sexes they are? :)

I think they see that many people, (we see someone different everytime we go), they just tell you anything tbh, and nobody follows up.

The midwife said i'd need to see a specialist about my back and having an epidural at my 12 week scan, and im still waiting to hear anything about it!.... and im now 24 weeks...

I dont mind whether I have a natural birth, im just concerned how much pain its going to be if I cant have an epidural, and also the chances of twin 2 turning when the 1st one is out- which happened to a friend of ours, then she had to have emergency c section!

Ive not been too worried about it till now- but im so excited, I just cant wait for them to be here now! Im having a girl and boy :) so pleased! Do you know what you are having?

You sound more organised than me- havent even got a hospital bag yet!! Although bought some things to go in it today :) as in possibly 10 weeks or more they might be here!!

We're having a boy and a girl too :) perfect, ready made family!! makes it a bonus that i wont have 3 hormonal teenage girls haha!!!! Ive actually got yellow sticky notes on my maternity notes saying what i need to ask!!! Surely though i'd have thought that all the professionals had the same opinion on each individual birth plan, therefore if they just look through the notes like they should do, they would all come up with the same outcome. I dont know anymore, just going in with an open mind and they will come how they want to come out :) x

Congrats to you both!

Might be a plan on your next midwife visit to bring this up as a concern - it's very unsettling to keep getting contradictory information.... I think part of the problem is that different health care people have different opinions about risk and what they would suggest often goes on their own personal experience, rather than what research says etc. Everyone is trying to do their best, but that can mean very different things to different people!

Either way, you're both carrying two little bundles and it's be nice to reduce the stress as much as possible and have more of an idea where you stand....

Hope you get some definitive answers soon!
