sammylou1987   10 #25 Posted August 13, 2012 Try national tyres, they're offering MOT's for £27.50 with free test.  Just had mine today and it passed woo!  Sam Why would you pay extra for a check before the MOT ? It's better to find a reliable MOT garage that does free retests. You will be able to find one that does MOT's for £35-40, with a free retest within two weeks. That should give you enough time to sort it yourself if it fails.  Just make sure you understand their terms first. you want a place that will let you take the vehicle off-premises and still get a free retest when you bring it back repaired. RootsBooster   24 #28 Posted August 16, 2012 Agreed , I had advisory this year for brake pads 3/4 new was well mad after buying a replacement set to find they didn't need it !  On an MOT, they don't remove any wheels, but do a visual inspection of the brakes, if visible. On many cars the wheels/spokes and calliper assembly can cast shadows which make it difficult to accurately judge the thickness of the rake pads. It is quite common to find an advisory on your sheet, this is most likely just the tester being cautious (and watching their own back). An advisory notice is not a fail and you are not forced to have any work done. You would be much angrier (or deader) if they didn't advise it and the brakes actually were more worn than they could see on the test.
