Roadworks on A61 Penistone Road - potential delays

Recommended Posts

seems to me this would've been better off in the summer when football traffic isn't there, depending on what game there could be 20-30,000 people mulling around penistone road,so that was thought out and planned !! as if it doesn't get congested enough on matchdays

All roadworks are extensively planned and have to be agreed with the Council, who have a specialist team that deals with planing and regulating roadworks.

The people who are promoting these works have a statutory right to bury their plant in the road, the Council cannot stop them. The work on the A61 looks to be part of a major programme of works.

They do plan as much work as possible over the summer when traffic is lightest. However, you have to be realistic, not all the work needed can be done in the summer. There is a moratorium on all significant roadworks over the Christmas and New Year period so as to minimise disruption over the busiest time of year on the roads.

Fair play putting in the old 11 hour days. That's good old fashioned hard graft. If your employer is telling you that's flexi-time however I think they are pulling the wool over your eyes. Miss the traffic by starting early and then miss it again by finishing late isn't flexi-time, it's work really long hours. So either your employer is lying or you are. I think we know which one is factual don't we?

My employer promotes very flexible working and I know exactly how the system works thank you. I'm a Local Authority manager and when you get to my level, sometimes you have to put in long hours to get the job done.

I normally arrive fairly late to avoid morning peak and leave fairly late to avoid evening peak.

Did have to smile at all the people who decided to try and beat the roadworks by cutting through the bottom end of Grenoside only to find that the junction between Cinder Hill and A16 has been blocked off (been like that for over 20 years). Saw 5 cars pull up to the concrete bollards and turn back there in about 2 minutes

They did that when I was a lad, so it will be over 20 years ago. I bet the locals down there will be delighted if there's a lot of traffic using it as a rat run. My parents live on Grenobank, I'll have to ask them if they've seen an increase in the volume of traffic.

Traffic was tailed back as far as Haliwood Rd this morning at 0845. So, no change there.

Traffic was pretty bad at around 7:45, I would hate to be travelling out of Sheffield on the A61 at 5:30pm. I imagine it will be a nightmare

No no, it will all be fine, everything has been planned to the finest detail by the planners at SCC, anyone who claims to be held up in traffic a liar, there is no traffic congestion in Sheffield, Planner1 say so!!!

It was only a couple of minutes delay when I got there about 7am, added very little to my journey.

My feedback to YW/SCC would be that rather than describing the places where the works will be by road names etc some signs in advance that are placed at the junctions saying a week or 2 before, "will be closed here from" etc would be much better. I commute on the a61 everyday but know none of the road names off it as I've never used any of them.

Hmm, at first I was worried but now you say Planner1 says everything is going to be OK I am feeling quite reassured. I mean, Planner1 is as impartial as they come. He deals with only cold hard fact. And his signature also states that he's not affiliated with Sheffield City Council. Yes, yes, I'm sold!

Took me twice as long to get to work today (took and hour as opposed to 30 mins). However, think was mainly due to the rat runs still being a no go due to the weather so everyone was on the main routes.

So far had no problems with the a61 apart but I’m going out of town on the AM and in to town on the PM.

Did catch the bus to work yesterday as I couldn’t get my car off my road and went the opposite way to the queue on Barnsley road. From what I could see it was going all the way from outside the college to near Morrison’s in Ecclesfield. Fun times

I would say it held me up by about 5 minutes going into town at 7am this morning, although as a result I did hit slightly heavier traffic in Hillsborough and therefore my overall delay was nearer 10 minutes.

I feel sorry for those heading into town at about 8 am, I bet it's a nightmare.

I'll be quite happy to keep people informed of the tailbacks on Halifax Road, I live overlooking the speed cameras just before the Chaucer cross-roads.

At 4:30 pm yesterday the traffic was queuing as far back as Lidl (for those travelling North) as people were having to merge into single file and yes there were the more impatient ones travelling in the RHL and *pushing in* err I mean politely waiting to merge *ahem*.

The congestion lasted 'til around 6pm.
