Steptoad
How long does a disc defrag take? I set mine to defrag and went out, came home six hours later to find only 1% of the task had been done. Is this about right?
Paul Blade
How big is it? and how long was it since last one? and finally how much space is there on it?
Steptoad
It's a 35.06 GB, there' 9.96 GB of free space and as far as I know it's never been defragged before.
neeeeeeeeeek
Try it in safe mode.
Resident
The old adage of 'how long is a piece of string?' applies here.
AlexAtkin
I suspect the reason is that there are still open applications that are writing to the disk which forces defrag to constantly re-start. This is quite a common problem and as suggested, try doing it in safe mode so that nothing is running that might be disrupting it.
PrimalJay
Your computer needs a full format if it takes that long, either that or a new hard drive. Or it could be dodgy software screwing it all up.

The first time I tried it, over several hours every time I looked it'd restarted, and that was when I found out about open applications forcing constant restarts. Safe mode is the way to go! PrimalJay
Install this, run defrag and optimize from the drop down menu and select shut down after defrag. Auslogics is one of the simplest, quickest and most thorough free defrag tools there is. http://www.auslogics.com/en/software/disk-defrag/download/
Steptoad
Try it in safe mode. Cheers mate that's done it. I'm not sure how long it actually took, but it was under two hours. Thanks everybody else for your suggestions:clap:
