spinac   10 #1 Posted January 7, 2006 Your partner's out, your mates are broke (or don't share the same taste in films) and you're bored, stuck in the house with nothing exciting to do. Would you go to the cinema alone or rent a DVD?  In the cinema, it's not like being in a pub on your tod with people staring at you - everyone's watching the film, but I still reckon most folks would rent a DVD rather than go to the cinema alone.  Would you be more likely to go if you could buddy up with others in a similar position?  What would you see? Kink Kong? Match Point or March of The Penguins?
 Share this content via...

Ditz   10 #4 Posted January 7, 2006 I never go with anyone else.I always go on my own. mainly cos i like being on me own and i like being on my own when watching films cos it allows me to get into them. when im with other people im constantly thinking about whther they're enjoying it and worrying about them getting bored so i go by myself cos i end up enjoying it a lot more.  go by urself next time. its the best thing! cos u can watch the movie that YOU want to watch and not what ur friends want to watch and enjoy urself more. AtticusFinch   10 #5 Posted January 7, 2006 I usually go to the cinema on my own, and I've never understood the social stigma that goes with that. I don't view a film as a social event, it's the film itself that's important. I like to sit on the very front row in the middle, because it's easy to forget that other people are there. I like to get the feeling that I'm watching my own personal video wall with a massive surround-sound system.  When I'm back at my parents' house I sometimes go to the cinema with a friend. Unlike me, she is susceptible to what "other people" think, so she never goes to the cinema on her own. Usually she'll wait for me to come back so we can see a film that she wants to see. If I'm not back, she won't see the film, so she'll miss a film she wants to see in order to conform to the social expectations of a bunch of complete strangers. Kry10 Â Â 10 #8 Posted January 7, 2006 I tend to go to the cinema on my own, went yesterday and watched King Kong and Just Like Heaven, it would be nicer to see a film with someone, but, it is unlikely to happen anytime soon. Rich   12 #9 Posted January 7, 2006 I've been sat in the UGC on a Friday morning watching films when there's been only me in before now.  Probably cos nobody else goes to the Cinema for 10 AM on a Friday morning like I do occassionally. BrainThrust   10 #10 Posted January 7, 2006 I go the the cinema on my own a lot of the time. I go for soem of the same reasons as Ditz: I find I worry abouy everyone else and don't watch the film in its entirity.  I'm also the worst person to watch a film with since I became a filmmaker too, I see clever things that have been done and just have to share them with everyone. That and plot holes too.  Thats why I watch them alone, I don't have to share these thoughts with anyone without worrying they're not getting everything from the film.  Wilf
 Share this content via...

Lucretia_73   10 #12 Posted January 7, 2006 I prefer watching films alone for the reasons above. I feel a lot more relaxed if I don't have to worry as to what someone else is thinking.  I find I can't concentrate as well when someone is sat next to me as I'm too aware of their presence to really immerse myself, and when the film is finished I like to still feel like I'm in it for a while and not have to hit reality again too soon.  I hate the cinema when it's busy as people are talking and rustling and coughing and it detracts from my immersion so I tend to go straight after work for anytime between 4 and 6 which can be an awkward time for people I know to get there if they work out of Sheffield or don't have flexi-time.  I get to see the films I want to see when I want to see them. I can watch them as a quick fix without having to make it a social event which is handy when you have a couple of hours to kill. Plus I can watch any old rubbish and if it's really dire I can leave when I like and not feel guilty of like I have to stay if someone else is enjoying it  I went to see Match Point after work yesterday and I found it to be a bit unoriginal and dull in parts but I love Jonathan Rhys Meyers so that kept me going. Can't say that would have worked for my mates though...
 Share this content via...
