Andy
I've seen that East Midlands Trains drivers are holding further strikes on 6, 7 and 8 August. This will affect anyone using their services, including anyone with Olympics tickets wishing to travel to London. Regular EMT users will remember that there was severe disruption earlier this year when the drivers went on strike. These latest strikes are about the same issues. Talks between the company and the union continue More details from the BBC: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-18899474 Latest statement from EMT: http://www.eastmidlandstrains.co.uk/site-information/News/East-Midlands-TrainsASLEF-talks---update-21-July-2012/
wiseroni
If they can build drones to shoot terrorists up and have automated trains on parts of the London Underground then it shouldn't be too "far down the line" (Pardon the pun) before we have driverless high-speed trains and then what will these greedy cretins do? Andy
Well quite. The Docklands Light Railway is all driven by computers - but there is still a staff member on board who can drive if necessary. Having said that there's a world of difference between a local metro system and an intercity (reasonably) high speed rail line.
LeMaquis
If they can build drones to shoot terrorists up..... The drones invariably hit the wrong target so you could get on a driverless train to London and end up in Edinburgh.
1978
The drones invariably hit the wrong target so you could get on a driverless train to London and end up in Edinburgh. I've yet to travel on a train where the driver had any choice as to where his train went. Stopping, that's another matter.

Jordan 1989
East Midlands trains are horrible anyway; always opt for Transpennine Express when I'm traveling up to Manchester.

Andy
That doesn't help people travelling to London though - I would imagine at least a few people from Sheffield have tickets to the Olympics on those days. Those passengers will need to travel either to Doncaster to connect with East Coast services, or get a Cross Country train to Derby to connect with the East Midlands Trains services as they are not running as far as Sheffield. I am quite surprised that EMT are trying to put a positive spin on this. Their website claims that they are "going the extra mile" which is quite odd given that their main route (London to Sheffield) is being cut short on those days.
