Location114
So guys recently i signed upto talktalk and all is working ok but the speed im getting is quite frankly pathetic 2.5Meg I suspect its down to the fact the free router is so low quality so im looking at another one just wondered if anyone could tell me if it will drastically improve my speed I am aware your line can only take a certain speed but surely more then that. http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/belkin-n150-wireless-modem-router-10991874-pdt.html That is the one I am considering. HeadingNorth
Might I suggest the low-tech safety guarantee: buy your new router from somewhere that has a good returns policy, similar to Argos where you can return something within 14 days for whatever reason, no questions asked. (I don't know if Argos sell routers.) That way you can buy the new router, try it out, and if it is no better than the free one you can just take it back for a full refund. Mikes10
I'm with BT and I live at Crookes and connected to the Broomhill exchange: its about 1-kilometre distance. Using Speedtest to Milton Keynes I get 8.00-Mbps and a nice flat trace. I doubt the router is your problem, more likely to be distance to exchange, internal phone wiring or t..kt..k and their spin. Who are the neigbours with and what speed to they get? Enter your postcode here and see whats speeds are in your area http://www.uswitch.com/broadband/speedtest/streetstats/
ronthenekred
18.3 download and 0.8 upload. 250 meters from exchange. Try Mikes10 suggestion before parting with cash. If you have to then follow HN's suggestion.
Leah-Lacie
Mines worse than pathetic, even lower than 2meg I think. When I had to have the socket repaired once though, the bloke did say I'm just about as far from the exchange as possible, 1.5km (Sharrow exchange to Norton lees)

Leah-Lacie
Just done an actual test on http://www.speedtest.net and I actually get 0.56mb download, and 0.50mb upload http://www.uswitch.com/broadband/speedtest - gives me a different result, of 0.60mb download, and 0.33mb upload. As you can see, its as pathetic as can be

My speed practically trebled from 0.5-0.7Mb to 2Mb when I plugged the router into the main BT socket by passing all the internal wiring. 2MB is about the maximum I can get where I live.
