Sheffield's entire road network to be resurfaced over next five years

Recommended Posts

With the entire network of the city's roads being resurfaced over the next 5 years starting in September I thought I'd start a thread on what you think of the proposals and any gripes or plaudits you may have while the work is underway.

Here's Amy's website press release with their contact details if anybody needs them.:)

This looks promising. I particularly like the idea of LED lights that can be dimmed.

The first 3 areas of Shiregreen, Ewden and Carbrook should be a good testing ground for how smoothly this work is likely to proceed as well as how smooth the finished roads will be.

http://www.thestar.co.uk/community/green-scene/smooth-operators-sheffield-s-2-billion-road-resurfacing-streets-revealed-1-4751566

"The first areas to receive smooth new road surfaces in Sheffield’s £2 billion Streets Ahead scheme can today be revealed – as the city also gets set to be the first in the world lit up entirely by LED streetlights.

Roads in Shiregreen and streets near Stocksbridge will be first to be resurfaced under the work to renew all the city’s highways.

And the familiar orange glow of traditional streetlamps is to be replaced by brighter white light, as Sheffield becomes the first city in the world to have all its streetlights fitted with light-emitting diodes.

Lights will also be centrally-controlled, with officials able to reduce or increase the brightness.

Work begins on Monday, September 3, to resurface roads around the Shiregreen estate, which will take around six weeks, and roads around Ewden, between Bradfield and Stocksbridge.

In Ewden the scheme will take until the end of December because streetlights are also being replaced, and bridges and walls repaired.

Street lights have already been replaced in Shiregreen.

A third area, Carbrook, will see work starting from October and lasting until the New Year."

It's great news, so long as they don't use that horrible surface that needs vehicles to drive over it for it to 'set'.

Or the concrete slab type. I hate motorways with that stuff on them, the noise is unbearable!

I just noticed this quote in the press statement from Amey

"Up to 500 Sheffield City Council staff will TUPE over to Amey once the contract starts"

Does that mean short term contracts and minimum wages? I do hope not!

No because Amey will be in hot water if they try to change the rate of pay, in a TUPE transfer.Every thing stays the same, except they can change weekly, fortnightly or monthly pay.

In my experience when things like this happen, it usually means folk are worse off in one way or another.

I'm not sure what TUPE actually means.
