Henamy21
Hi, can anyone tell me what is classed as the immediate family when someone passes away when needing Bereavement leave from work as i thought only husband & wife / son & daughter / mum & dad / brother & sister were classed as the immediate family many thanks
indizine
Yes that's usually the case, and step/adopted parents or siblings too. But some sympathetic employers may give way to grandparents, best friends, etc. Perhaps fore the latter set, give time off but without pay is the half way offer. However, there is no Law that says they have to give it as paid leave but most do give paid time off for the close family members you have listed. becky_s
There is no statutory entitlement to bereavement leave per se. What you can get is unpaid dependent leave, which probably would cover all of the above relatives in the event of the death. It's there to deal with the practicalities rather than time to grieve, so usually employers have a policy in place dealing with bereavement leave for employees.
