A question about puppy food!

Morning! Please can anyone advise?

Our whippet puppy will be joining us at the end of August, and is currently being weaned on something I didn't catch the name of, but DID catch the price of - £35 a bag! Woah! I really don't mind spending a bit on good quality food, and I know it lasts longer etc etc, but I'd much rather find a good quality middle ground food for her to have when she joins us. I've been looking at Hills, Iams, Advanced Nutrition, Wellbeloved, ProPlan etc...there are loads of them!

I don't know where to start! My last dog refused to eat anything but Bakers, even when I tried to get her to eat better quality stuff. The one before that was on a prescription diet for dodgy kidneys, so that was that. The one before that wolfed down absolutely anything lol.

Is there anywhere obvious to get samples of these foods? I don't want to go buying a kilo to find that it doesn't agree with her or something, and I realise there is basically a "try it and see" approach here.

Wondered if you experienced people had some ideas? I tried the websites of each food but they don't seem to have any samples to send for?

Thanks x

It could be no coincidence that the only brands offering small doggy bags to try are placed in vets and cost north of £35 a bag.

When we collected our puppy boxer we double checked on the food they were using, bought a small bag locally as it wasn't a pricey food but a "specialist" big breed food, when that ran out we weaned him onto the adult food. A 2.5kg bag will last a puppy ages and most feed can be bought in these bags i think.(except Dr Johns!!!)

tbh prior to that i've fed all my dogs the same food even with our first puppy spaniel.(but it doesn't make it the right way)

Hmmm....

Or - as an additional question, does anyone have any thoughts on Advanced Nutrition vs Wainwrights vs Purina Beta vs James Wellbeloved?! They all start looking more or less the same, the more I look at them!

£35 a bag sounds like a 15kg sack that's being used to feed the whole litter

it's not good to upset a pup's digestion by suddenly changing foods, so double check with the breeder what the dog is actually eating at the moment

Duh - yes you're probably right Strix! I have texted her to ask what it was that they are on. When we pick up our pup, we will be given a supply to take home, so if I do change it, I will be able to gradually mix rather than change suddenly.

Wainwrights is looking like agood balance of quality and price. Anyone use this?
