Removing rubbish, over clocking, under volting, different kernels, custom roms, blocking ads, changing dpi....

Ah yeah, blocking ads! Would be good if there is a way to detect if ad blocking is in effect, and if so, make applications stop working. You can see how Android, being so open, isn't as attractive to developers as iOS!

I've installed many different ROMs on here till I find one that I like

So which one have you settled on?

Having had a look around at the roms available, there didn't seem to be that many and they didn't seem to add very much beyond the stock.

There isn't any crap or bloat to remove as far as I can tell, the only function I would like is to have the home screen rotate, but I can fix that without rooting by installing an alternative home screen.

Stickmount as Bonjon said seems to be the main driver, but I don't really see the big need for it myself, I can connect it by cable or wireless very easily to my home storage, and 16GB is more than enough internal space for my needs.

Waldo - I suppose that would be possible, try to ping the ad domain from within the app and if there is no reply (ie the request has been routed to /dev/null or similar) then app exits. Bit pants for any app that should be able to run offline though, particularly on a nexus where it doesn't have 3G connectivity and may well be offline whenever you travel with it.

Yeah, adverts seem to be way more prevalent on Android than on iOS, loads of free Android apps, that have Ads.

It's a big issue for app developers, how do you go about monetizing your apps? I'd much prefer not to use ads in any game I put out, but it seems piracy is easier and more prevalent on Android than on iOS, hence, many developers resort to ads, or just don't bother with the Android platform at all.

I've got a couple of apps that detect that I'm blocking ads - they politely ask you to update to the paid version much better than blocking users.

I'll be "road testing" my nexus in France for the next two weeks - loaded loads of music, free books, guardian crossword app etc on ot and I've still got a good 10 gig of storage left. Most campsites have wifi of some description these days so I'll see how it goes.

Yeah, I wonder if the developers make more money from a polite request, of from just cutting the user off altogether (no ads, so you're not generating any revenue for me, so good-bye etc).

I'm a bit turned off the whole idea of monetizing apps with ads. I don't ads, they make any app ugly. I'm more inclined to look at making an app free, and using IAP somehow to generate revenue from it. Either through unlocking extra content, or providing character customisation, or something extra.

Really not sure what the best way would be; need to do more research!
